I'm exploring the idea of organising a summer film festival in my neighbourhood. I've requested a quote for "One, Two, Three", Billy Wilder's comedy from 1961. How much do you think they asked me (free access/no tickets, tiny audience)? Answer in next tweet xD

I spent the day with the Devengo team talking AI and implementing a Ruby MCP Server SDK from scratch to truly understand the spec. Ended up being just ~150 lines of simple Ruby code ❤️❤️❤️

The financial world is an incredibly interconnected and regulated web that very often puts you between a rock and a hard place, with very few options to make it "work" when the core nodes fail.

You want a peek? These are just _some_ of the downtime incidents at MAJOR banks over the last two days.
110
Aitor García Rey @aitor.is · 12/06/2025
And you can't work around them! Your money, as anyone else's, MUST go through them. Are they not working? Well, you are pretty much fucked no matter what you prepared in advance or tried to do.

You can (and SHOULD) do that in fintech companies, of course. However, if you continue to delve deeper and closer to the bare metal of the financial world, you will eventually encounter the big whales: automated clearing houses operating at a continental level... central banks!

Typically, in tech, preparing for potential incidents significantly increases the likelihood of a swift and effective recovery. You can make your deployments multi-cloud, multi-zone, and introduce high availability in all components, among other options. At the end of the day, it's YOUR product.

One thing that makes the fintech sector not suitable for the faint of heart is that the tight regulation and centralisation of some major infrastructures completely restrict your options when things go south.

Koya Hatagaya – Tokyo (Hatagaya Station area) Comfort Chinese food done beautifully. Big flavors, warm vibes, and open until 3am (!). It’s the perfect end-of-night spot.

Asahido Honten Café – Kyoto (Near Kiyomizu-dera) Slip off the tourist-packed path and into this peaceful café inside a ceramics store. Tea, sweets, and silence. A lifesaver.

Hirami Pan – Kanazawa (Seseragi Street) A bakery inside an old ironworks, covered in ivy. Feels like a secret garden. Croissants and sourdough that would put most French bakeries to shame. A perfect example of how Japan can take something foreign and elevate it with craft and care.

Ramen Mikoshi – Kanazawa (Morinosato area) An absolute knockout. Deep, layered broth, springy noodles, and a quiet shop with serious ramen energy. One of my all-time favorites.

Tsubaki-en – Osaka (Neyagawa) This isn’t just “good meat”—it’s some of the best I’ve had anywhere. Binchotan charcoal-grilled, perfectly seasoned, and served like you’re family.

Maestro – Kyoto (Gosho Minami) Technically a flower shop, but to me? A lovely space. Coffee’s just a nice excuse to sit and take it in, while observing the owner work on another flower arrangement. I’d be here every week if I lived in Kyoto.

The staff were kind and clearly passionate about their craft. Even with limited English, they helped me pick the right brushes and tools. You leave wanting to paint something.

I also picked up two beautiful brushes: a broad hake for smooth washes and a fine brush for delicate line work. Both are handmade with natural hairs—built for precision and longevity. Just holding them makes you want to slow down and focus.

I picked up this beautiful Gansai set—traditional Japanese watercolors made from minerals and plants. Colors like Fukakusa green, colorete (blush red), Daisho brown, and indigo.

Inside, it’s a treasure trove: jars of mineral pigments, handmade paper, and rows of brushes—everything stored in worn wooden cabinets like a painter’s old pharmacy.

A few weeks ago in Kyoto, I stepped into Saiun-do, a tiny art supply store that feels like it never left the 1800s. Founded in 1863 and still run by the same family five generations later, it’s full of quiet beauty and tradition.

And here’s a favorite from Higashi-Osaka, home to Japan’s rugby culture. This sporty mascot is all geared up with a rugby ball — I found this one totally by chance!

Not all designs cover the whole lid. Sometimes there’s a little splash of color in the middle — like this safety-themed one featuring a cartoon kid and car. Even manholes say “look both ways” here.

Then there’s this bold, colorful cover promoting the 2025 Osaka Expo. It’s got the mascot “Myaku-Myaku,” who looks like a jellybean crossed with a water molecule. Science meets cuteness!

This Osaka cover featuring a fire truck is all about civic pride. Safety messages like these pop up in clever places. It’s practical and playful — very on-brand for Osaka!

I spent a month living in Japan and unexpectedly fell in love… with manhole covers. Yep. Japan turns utility covers into vibrant, local works of art. Here’s a thread about one of the coolest details hiding in plain sight:

We were pretty happy with our final work. Best thing? They keep the pieces, glaze them, bake them (twice) and will send them to Bilbao in 4-5 months. So we will have high quality handmade ceramics make by ourselves! #ABAJapan02025
