Economist Thomas Malthus: 'a civilised and well governed society...would not choose to feed the poor, since without the check of hunger, the poor would not work...'. Many in the British Establishment and its media take the same view in relation to Welfare cuts. Often combined with 'stop the boats'!

Just discovered this. Shows how the offshore Dollar, pumped by the fossil fuel powers laid the basis for dollar-based global dominance. And clear eyed about Chinese 'socialism'.

This is the best history of 20th Century Ireland I've ever read! The terrible hold of property rights (in land) the terrible price that exacted on young women, the toll on those who left (or stayed) in rural Ireland, it's a living history of the Irish working class in Britain, revealed through...1/2

Tooze: This was a strange form of class struggle that aligned enraged petty capitalists and right wing Oligarchs against corporate liberalism. The essence of Trumpism!

The mine owners demanded a 25% pay cut. When the TUC leaders met the Government to surrender, Tory Lord Birkenhead wrote: "(the surrender) was so humiliating that some instinctive breeding made one unwilling even to look at them". In the 1984 Miners strike, Labour leader, Neil Kinnock, did ditto.

Simply brilliant! How the US Federal Reserve's response to COVID flooded the economy with cheap credit, enabling the Tech Monopolists to launch an investment boom that means they dominate US Capitalism, bailed out the struggling manufacturing sector and boosted the Stock Markets greatly..1/2..

Musk's "turn to the Right": opposed a wealth tax, hates unions, opposed regulation of any kind, including anti-trust laws, hostility to public health measures during the pandemic. Now inciting the Far Right to attack black and brown people in Britain and Ireland.

Anyone wondering why the world's richest man, his appetite for Fascism and links to Trump's white nationalist base should read this. Even the Economist, handbook of the global monopolists, gives it a fair review, pointing out how this libertarian, anti-state Monopolist grew with government subsidies

As King Con goes to China: "China is the world's largest oil importer and consumer".... 33% comes from Russia, Iran and Venezuela (2024 figs). US has taken Venezuela's and is going after Iran's. Xi will not be pleased by US attempts to strangle China economically.

A really excellent account of how the City skewed the British Economy. Insights on its antisemitism too.

Brilliant, insightful and extremely relevent to current debates on the relation between the "modern" and "pre-modern and the need to avoid essentialism in our thinking about capitalism, and the ideological notions that sustain it, plus the ways in which its Orientalist attitudes sustain racism.

Interesting run through on central bank independence, how the private banking sector effectively creates credit & shapes investment decisions. Her proposal of 'iterative governance' (mainly in the US) as a way of reasserting democratic control seems incredibly naïve given global dominace by Finance.

This excellent book shows how racism is derived from British colonialism, specifically how the industrial revolution was funded by profits from slavery in the Carribean and the US South. The City of London's finance, insurance and trading in futures originated in the slave trade. A must read!

Interesting onservation by Streeck: "Hayekian democracy serves the function of making a capitalist market society appear to be the 'people's choice' even though it has long been removed from democratic control". A "technocratic- authoritarian market dictatorship" takes over.

"....ever new ways will be sought to exploit nature, extend and intensify working time and encourage....creative finance". A good summary of our present condition by Streeck.

A detailed, lucid account of the US Financial sector since the early 20th C. Useful in explaining the changes since, particularly the Fed. It raises all the issues of 'Finance Capitalism' but is fairly functionalist in approach, & does a poor job of "searching for the cracks in the current order".

Just started this. Quotes liberal internationalist Woodrow Wilson in 1917: "keeping the white race strong" and "white civilisation and its domination of the planet." Trumpism didn't just fall from the sky. It's a product of European (Christian) colonialism. Zionism and antisemitism are by-products.

This is encyclopaedic! 2008 High Court rules the Blair government's "abject surrender to the threats" from Saudi Arabia and BAE over the Al Salam arms deal....'an attempt by a foreign government to pervert the course of justice in the UK'. Bliar later became a 'consultant' to the Saudi regime.

Many complain about the inflow of Russian money in the 2010s, much of which went to the Tories. The Yamamah arms deal dates back to Thatcher and her son Mark. Key players were her Defence adviser Charles Powell. His brother Jonathan is now Chief of Staff to Starmer. Did the same job for Tony Bliar.

Like his mentor Blair, Starmer unquestionably supports US foreign policy, eg, on Palestine. The RAF helps the Genocidal Israeli regime.
