Really good edition right here from @aislinn.bsky.social on the nuances and pitfalls of a school redistricting process, particularly the background hum of property value and how one school committee member is being sorta obvious about it. Was a treat to edit and stoked to share it!

Redistricting, conflicts, and how we talk about our schools

Aislinn @aislinn.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Redistricting decisions should be based on what creates a stronger and more equitable school system for all Worcester students. Transparency about how the proposal affects the people casting the final votes can help build public trust in that process.

Aislinn @aislinn.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
That does not automatically mean any member has a conflict of interest. But before members deliberate and vote on a final plan, it could be appropriate to publicly disclose whether the proposal affects property they own and, where relevant, seek guidance from the State Ethics Commission.

The issue was not that her children attended the school, but that she owned a nearby home whose value could potentially be affected by the decision.

Aislinn @aislinn.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Why is this worth noting? In 2021, the MA State Ethics Commission advised a Natick School Committee member to recuse herself from deliberations and a vote involving the closure of her neighborhood elementary school.

The assignments for the addresses associated with Maureen Binienda, Jermaine Johnson, Alex Guardiola, Kathleen Roy and Joe Petty would not change under this initial scenario.

How would the initial redistricting scenario affect School Committee members? The initial scenario would change school assignments for: Mailman: Burncoat High→Doherty McCullough: Nelson Place→Norrback, Forest Grove→Burncoat Middle Alvarez: Elm Park→Chandler Elementary Biancheria: Belmont→City View

I mean based on the inaccuracies and how it’s written I’d say yes, but the poster on Reddit denies that.

For one, Vanessa Alvarez did not vote no. It was a 9-0 vote.

This is so concerning to me because there are multiple inaccuracies in this post (I couldn’t bring myself to read the full recap, just this is enough to enrage me), but people read it and assume it’s fact. In order to have constructive conversations we have to be working with accurate information.

I don’t think that’s true. Social media companies have been fined by the FTC for violations of COPPA. (I have been working on understanding kids and privacy with respect to WPS because schools can consent for parents on the collection of data.)

Aislinn @aislinn.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
What I’m saying is because of the federal law doesn’t social media already have to have a way to confirm kids are over 13?
100
Aislinn @aislinn.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
Here’s what the FTC says:
000
Aislinn @aislinn.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
My understanding is that tech companies have to ensure that they aren’t collecting data from kids without parental consent if they’re under 13. So they have to have a way to verify kids are 13 or older right? Or verify parental consent?

Doesnt COPPA already require age verification?

"Investing in modern [energy] infrastructure is not just an energy issue, it is an education imperative." AG's thesis is that modernizing energy infrastructure improves student learning, which is sort of a weird take...feels like something someone working in energy infrastructure would write?

I make $100 from Worcester Sucks each month to write WPS in Brief, so it doesn’t impact my livelihood like so many other artists and writers. But it’s still disappointing to see something I’ve honed over years stolen. Don’t use AI, please. It sucks.

Those of you who read WPS in Brief might read this and think I wrote it. Similar format, tone, even rephrased my tag line “my goal is to help you feel informed without feeling overwhelmed.” It’s not me. My guess is the writer used AI, which scraped my work.

Aislinn @aislinn.bsky.social · 01/03/2026
My mom is from Jamaica Plain, but yes this is how she described it! And the city came and picked it up once a week. But not on trash day. There was a garbage guy and a trash guy. I wonder when they stopped doing this.
010
Aislinn @aislinn.bsky.social · 01/03/2026
So my mom (who is in her seventies) just told me that growing up they had a pail in a hole in the yard that they put food waste into and that was called the garbage. And the trash was all other waste. How am I learning this for the first time and is this why it’s called a garbage disposal?!
