October 5, 1975 — A Boeing 737-200 operating a domestic flight was hijacked by members of the Montoneros organization during Operation Primicia. There were 108 people on board: 102 passengers and six crew members. The aircraft was diverted to Formosa and then used to escape the operation.

October 5, 1984 — The RTAF-5 prototype aircraft first flew in Thailand. It was a two-seat trainer and reconnaissance aircraft with a single turboprop engine mounted at the rear of the fuselage. The design did not enter series production—only one example was built.

October 5, 1914 — First Recognized Air Combat Victory Using Firearms Near Jonchery-sur-Vesle, near Reims, French Sergeant Joseph Frantz, piloting a Voisin III, and Corporal Louis Quénault shot down a German Aviatik aircraft. The German crew—Wilhelm Schlichting and Fritz von Zangen—were killed.

Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 Crash – October 4, 2001 A Russian Tupolev Tu-154 flying from Tel Aviv to Novosibirsk was shot down over the Black Sea by a Ukrainian S-200 anti-aircraft missile fired during a training exercise. 78 people died – 66 passengers and 12 crew members.

October 4–5, 1931 — First non-stop flights across the Pacific. Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon — Bellanca The American airmen took off from Japan on October 4 and landed in Washington State on October 5. Their plane, Miss Veedol, completed the Pacific crossing in 41 hours and 13 minutes.

October 4, 1960 — Eastern Air Lines Flight 375 crash Crash after collision with flock of birds A Lockheed L-188 Electra crashed shortly after takeoff from Boston's Logan Airport. Birds were sucked into three engines, causing a rapid loss of thrust and loss of control.

On October 4, 1955, the 113th Squadron of the Israeli Air Force was formed at Hatzor Air Base, becoming the first in the Israeli Air Force to operate French Dassault Ouragan fighters. The squadron played a role in the development of Israeli jet aviation before the 1956 Suez Crisis.

October 3–4, 1993 — Battle of Mogadishu Operation Gothic Serpent began on October 3 and lasted until the following day. U.S. special forces used MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, MH-6 Little Birds, and armed AH-6s. Two Black Hawks were shot down by Somali fighters using rocket-propelled grenades.

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first artificial Earth satellite into orbit. Sputnik 1 weighed approximately 83.6 kg, had a diameter of 58 cm, and orbited the Earth in approximately 96–98 minutes. Its radio signals could be received by ground stations and radio amateurs.

On October 3, 2021, a Romanian-registered Pilatus PC-12/47E crashed shortly after takeoff from Milan Linate Airport. The plane was flying from Milan to Olbia, Sardinia. Eight people died when it crashed into a building in San Donato Milanese.
