Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 21/09/2026Finally achieved Nine Sols ✨ Probably the hardest game I ever played so far, but still a very enjoyable one with great combat mechanics (the final boss fight especially was great and unfrustrating, despite my large number of attempts, as you can see...) I hope the next game will be easier though 😅 010
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 26/08/2026The pose and style make me think a lot of Masha and the Bear, is it intentional? 000
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 08/08/2026Have a great time in Iceland, went there several years ago and loved it 🦉 Do not forget to try the hot springs and Hraun chocolate biscuits there 010
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/08/2026first because it would be much harder to do what I want/need, and second because I would feel insulted by this kind of decision and would not want to do any business with a platform having this kind of mindset. (and no, devvit is not and will never be an acceptable alternative) 000
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/08/2026I moderate one subreddit and have been investing quite some time in developing bots (that still help us a lot today, especially to remove posts from spam and scam bots). If they eventually completely pull the plug on the API, then I will probably not continue dedicating myself to this platform, 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/08/2026What a disgrace from a website that used to be a symbol of the spirit of what the Internet is meant to be: a space of openness and freedom. I used to praise Reddit for its very rich API and ecosystem, but now it seems it is just turning to yet another walled garden. 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/08/2026So it seems that Reddit is no longer scared to admit that they want to turn off old.reddit.com in the future, and also that they plan to completely discontinue their API (even for long-standing good apps and bots, because denying new ones was apparently not enough...) arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026...arstechnica.comReddit signals ominous upcoming "changes” for old.reddit.comReddit says the beloved site is used for some "bad behavior." 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 23/07/2026I hope it's one of those bird designs that is going to be selected, first because I am a bird lover (deceived there's no owl though 😛) but also because I hate having "real" people on banknotes, I find it boring and unoriginal, and in a place so large and diverse as Europe it's a recipe for trouble 120
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 23/07/2026Although some culture designs are nice, I still hope it's a bird design that's getting selected: I never liked "real" people on banknotes, I find it unoriginal and boring, and a recipe for trouble (especially in a place so large and diverse as Europe) Too bad there is no owl though 🦉 010
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 23/07/2026As a bird lover AND someone with a passion for banknotes, this is exciting news 👀 I hope the next series will be as detailed and intricate as the current Swiss banknotes, which is for me the most amazing series ever created (with tons of little details inside) 110
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026- And given the experience I had here with this industry, I can tell it is not anytime soon I will use/purchase again anything under licence from a font company. (A lot of font companies apparently monitor usage of their fonts by subscribing to this kind of services, so I am not an isolated case) 000
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026Well, on my side I definitely learnt the lesson: - From now on, I will use fonts primarily from fonts.google.com, as all fonts there are under an open license - If I want to use something else, I will check twice if the font is ACTUALLY free/open-source on the author's website 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026Eventually, I ended up paying for the "missing license". Most would probably say I should not have (as this was very unlikely to go to court, given my situation), but I wanted to be done with it and I believe it was a price for the "lesson learnt". 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026I am generally very careful and respectful with usage of contents under copyrights, first because I want to value free software/open-source culture, and second because I want to avoid problems and nuisances like this. But this time, I made a genuine mistake. 😬 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026Generally, font licensing is a hellhole you do not want to get into. Websites like dafont.com are risky to use, as there is no verification and you cannot be sure that an "open-source font" or "100% free font" actually is (there were cases of copyrighted fonts described as such there) 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026But as I searched for more info, I found even more surprising cases. In this thread, some person is also being chased down, despite HAVING a license through Adobe Fonts: forum.alsacreations.com/topic-18-909... The mistake they did was including the files directly and not through Adobe Fonts.forum.alsacreations.com"Amende" à payer pour une font utilisée sans license - AlsacreationsForum pour webmasters, création de sites web avec HTML 5, XHTML, CSS 3 et Standards W3C 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026(Because legally, you are in the wrong and they know it) I tried over multiple emails to remind them the 5 points above, but they straight did not care. I was talking to a wall, unable to make a difference between an hobbyist making a mistake and a Fortune 500 company being stingy. 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026You immediately remove the fonts? You do not make any money with your website? You use a font that is extremely common (just like here)? Your website barely get any visits? The font was only used on 10 characters? None of this matter: again, they will chase you down because they want your money. 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026This is how I learnt that there are companies that scan the web for "unlicensed" use of fonts. Long story short: once they detected such use, they will hunt you down until you pay and never release their grip. And it's not like DMCA where removing the copyrighted content is enough. 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026And last month, I received this email from some kind of "license enforcing" company. (This looks like a scam but it is not: the company making Consolas state on their website that they are working with them and that they are acting on their behalf) 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026And on ailothaen.fr, I was using method 2 (even if that was not very useful, because most people run on Windows and already have the Consolas font installed, so it would have still worked for them) But that also means I was distributing font files. 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026But there is an important nuance here: On websites, there are two ways you can use a font. 1. You tell the browser to load the font "Consolas" 2. Same as 1, but you also provide the font files 2 is more reliable since it ensure it works even if the person does not have the font on their device 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026Since a long time, I have been using the font "Consolas" on my website ailothaen.fr. It should be noted that this font has been included in Windows for a very long time, so I naively thought that it was free to use (as long as you are not using it commercially) 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 05/07/2026PSA: If you build and run sites – or, more generally, if you are a content creator – on the Internet, be VERY careful about the fonts you are using and double-check them, even if they are described as "free" or "open". Story about a misfortune that happened to me 🔽 110

Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 11/10/2025But it seems like most email providers did not get the memo and continue (even today) to say that 587 is the best option and 465 is deprecated. I was thinking again earlier this week that emails are the most troublesome thing in IT, and again I was not deceived 😵 000
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 11/10/2025From what I understood, the answer is that, **as of 2025**, 465 should be the preferred option (makes sense, since it is always encrypted). But for a long time, 465 was more like a draft and eventually got considered deprecated before it was brought back alive by RFC 8314 in 2018 100
Ailothaen @ailothaen.net · 11/10/2025Today, while configuring a printer to send emails for document scans, I wondered (again) if I should use port 465 (SSL/TLS) or port 587 (STARTTLS) for SMTP communications, but this time I took the time to actually read the full story behind it. And clearly, I was not ready for that 🤯 100
