Severe weather is possible later this afternoon through early evening. A watch may be issued if storms in northern Indiana continue to strengthen. All hazards are on the table if storms form. Most likely areas would be south of M-59 and into Ohio.

A severe weather risk for the west side of the state exists mainly late Friday, potentially toward Saturday morning. While southeast Michigan is not included, we'll keep a close eye on conditions as rain and some basic storms are possible at that time.

Full closure on 196 near Hudsonville on the west side of the state. Ottawa County dispatch confirmed to me over the phone that their officer on scene said approx. 100 vehicles involved. This is an eyeball estimate from crews on scene, but I'm told it is significant.

This is a significant update. Hurricane Hunter aircraft confirming 180mph winds, gusts much higher, and pressure down to 896mb. She joins the extremely rare sub-900 club for pressure. Melissa is still strengthening, and is officially one of the top 5 strongest hurricanes ever recorded.

Heat enters the hazardous range on Sunday and Monday with a heat index potentially topping 100 degrees. We've got storms tomorrow first, but don't forget about the next round of impactful weather.

The heat index for most of the state of Michigan will be higher than 95 degrees on Sunday and Monday according to this forecast with much of the areas south of the Saginaw Bay region close to or above 100 degrees.

New info just came in. The NWS has confirmed another tornado from the severe weather on May 16th, this one in Layton Corners in Saginaw County. We are now at the 7th Most Tornadoes in a single year for the state of Michigan.

Significant issues with not just the GFS, but other models as well. Forecasts for everything are only as good as the tools available. A lower amount of data from weather balloons and other cut info shows these are factual issues, not speculation anymore.

Saturday is a significant severe weather day for the south. The pink highlight is a High risk. Bottom line, these are rare. If you have any friends or family that live within the red or pink highlighted zones, you need to check that they are aware of how serious this risk is.

I have an update on the NWS firing information I mentioned last week. 2 more locations will be unable to launch their twice-per-day radiosondes due to the staffing cuts in Albany, New York and Gray, Maine. All weather apps, models, forecasts, etc. use this data to forecast.

I have confirmed that weather balloon launches for western Alaska have been halted due to the firings today. For a little background, weather balloons are launched normally twice per day, more during a severe day, and we get most of our raw data from these launches.

I-94 has a significant backup just off of Van Dyke due to an accident. Look at the road and you can see that icy coat of light snow already. This is the issue, this snow is very icy and light amounts will cause roads to become slippery very fast. Main storm arrives later this evening.
