The FCC voted unanimously in 2024 to confirm that AI-generated voice calls are unlawful without the consent of the person being called, since an AI-cloned human voice is artificial by definition. A reversal of this interpretation would require a vote by the full Commission.

Consumers reasonably expect the rules protecting them from unwanted robocalls to hold steady while they decide how to vote, not for the FCC to change them at the 11th hour to unleash a deluge of political AI slop on their phones.

Granting this request would run counter to privacy protections Congress put into law and betray the trust consumers place in this agency to protect them from deceptive and intrusive calls.

🚨 A dark money group wants the FCC to let it unleash a flood of unwanted political AI slop straight to people's phones. Doing so would bring chaos and deception so close to Election Day. 🧵

With nearly half of Americans struggling to afford the cost of living, the Lifeline program is helping them get online and stay online. We must pursue fraud wherever the evidence leads, free from politics and without taking support away from law-abiding families who rely on Lifeline.

The FCC's sole defense is that its review was required by process. The court appeared skeptical, and rightly so. Threatening license revocation is an extreme step, basically a death sentence over a speeding ticket. I remain confident the First Amendment will prevail here

Yet again a court steps in to defend a free press and uphold the First Amendment. But this fight isn't confined to newsrooms banned from the White House. The FCC has been going after the press for coverage it doesn't like. Courts should draw that same line when its turn comes.

FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez on Paramount-Warner Bros merger: “This settlement appears to pave the way for yet another massive media consolidation deal that could raise prices for consumers, reduce content diversity, and weaken editorial independence”

I'll be watching closely to see whether these promises translate into real protections or will be just words on a page.
2171
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Whether these commitments actually protect newsrooms inside CBS and CNN from political, financial, or regulatory pressure, or simply provide cover for further editorial interference, remains to be seen.
2182
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
The editorial independence protections included in this settlement remain untested, and there is good reason to be skeptical they will hold up once the ink is dry.

FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
This settlement does nothing to resolve the FCC’s own unprecedented decision to approve near complete and unchecked indirect foreign ownership of one of America’s largest media companies from some of the most repressive governments in the world. See here: docs.fcc.gov/public/attac...

That's why I called for this new and novel issue to go to a full Commission vote given what's at stake. Instead, the FCC snuck this ruling out as a staff-level decision, with no public vote and no accountability for a call of this magnitude. More to come on this soon.

FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
The FCC just let some of the most repressive governments in the world indirectly control nearly all of a combined Paramount-Warner Bros. An investment this large in one of America's biggest media companies doesn't just buy equity, it secures influence over what gets said and what gets made.

I urge broadcasters everywhere to keep resisting this pressure, and I hope courts will soon make clear that the FCC has no place dictating editorial choices or what viewers are allowed to see.

Unlike other broadcasters who have quietly capitulated, Disney’s ABC has continued to fight this unlawful coercion in court, and episodes like this one only strengthen that case.
1165
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
The FCC has no lawful authority to threaten broadcast licenses over guest bookings or editorial decisions. And yet there is no way to know how many other editorial decisions across the country have quietly been shaped by this same pressure.

This is now the second time in a matter of months that a late-night host has disclosed they had to bury an interview because of FCC intimidation. No host, local affiliate, or network should have to weigh federal retaliation before booking a guest for a newsworthy interview 🧵

Polls can be wrong. That's no surprise to anyone who has followed politics over the last decade. The FCC faces a very high bar to prove news distortion, and it requires clear evidence of an intentional effort to mislead the public. Without it, this is all political theater.
0145
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
News coverage of a poll that doesn't favor a political party is not a license to meddle in an election through intimidation. Broadcasters should take note. Do not let a sad and desperate attempt to punish accurate reporting become an excuse for censorship.

This SCOTUS decision throws the midterm election into chaos. It allows the FCC to unleash a flood of dark money by letting a handful of wealthy donors pool unlimited contributions into political advertising. All this while forcing local broadcast stations to foot the bill ⬇️

With the right information, this scorecard could increase consumer awareness of how providers fight illegal robocalls. Much like Broadband Labels and the Cyber Trust Mark, I've supported efforts to inform consumers and hold industry accountable so I look forward to learning more.

As I've said many times, the FCC has no authority to punish journalists this administration doesn’t like. These threats to press freedom are dangerous. They undermine the foundation of our democracy, and they have no place in it.

BREAKING: An appeals court just moved to block the FCC’s plan to unleash new dark money spending on political broadcasting ads. This is a victory for transparency, the rule of law and for broadcasters who would've been asked to shoulder most of the costs of these dark money ads.

You cannot claim broadcasters are struggling to survive and then force them into a fire sale on the one thing that could actually help them compete and increase revenue.

Broadcasters are being directed to slash prices and sell their most valuable inventory during their busiest and most lucrative season, even as this same FCC has spent months arguing broadcasters need economic and regulatory relief to compete with Big Tech and streaming.

FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
This unprecedented, last-minute decision gives the biggest political spenders an even bigger advantage over everyone else by expanding the candidate-only broadcast political ad discount established by law to joint fundraising and party committees.

🚨In the final stretch of a national election, this FCC is helping unleash a flood of dark money into broadcast advertising. The American people should not have sweeping election-year rule changes forced on them in the dark and on the eve of an election. 🧵

It’s high time that we have a corporate parent like Disney show courage, stand up and push back against this administration’s overreach and constitutional violations. This should be a welcome sign for every broadcaster who has felt the weight of government pressure in silence.

I’m glad Disney has shown courage and stepped up. It is time this administration understands that the Constitution does not bend to political convenience, and that the First Amendment protects the news and commentary Americans see on their screens even when those in power wish it didn’t.

Your local newsroom used to decide what you got to watch. Now that decision increasingly runs through whether it pleases the White House, and without a consumer protection measure like the national ownership cap in place, it will only get worse.

Communities depend on strong, independent local journalism. Eliminating a statutory cap without addressing these interconnected issues will hasten the very collapse we should be working to prevent.
0146
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
We do not have to look far for a warning sign. When this Commission unlawfully waived the cap to clear the way for the Nexstar-TEGNA merger, a federal judge halted the deal, finding that the states and DirecTV are likely to succeed in proving it violates antitrust law.
1136
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
The FCC's decision to eliminate the 39 percent national audience reach cap is unlawful on its face. Congress set this cap in federal law, and only Congress can change it.
1106
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez @agomezfcc.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Eliminating the national broadcast ownership cap does not free local broadcasters from economic pressure, it just changes who's doing the squeezing. Trading a squeeze from Big Tech for a squeeze from Big Media does nothing to protect the communities this cap was designed to serve. 🧵

The FCC has no business deciding who is a journalist and what counts as real news. We cannot allow local stations to become collateral damage in the FCC's political games.
