When you think about it, ageism sounds absurd. Our new nationwide advertising campaign is now live until May. The ads point out the absurdity of ageism through the eyes of a child, and whilst first appearing light-hearted, they highlight how harmful ageism is for us all. See agewithoutlimits.org

Today, we’re supporting @agewithoutlimits.bsky.social #AgeWithoutLimitsDay – a day to join forces to celebrate ageing and challenge ageism where we experience or see it. Being treated differently because of our age is never acceptable. Notice it ¦ Challenge It ¦ Change it.
Being treated negatively because of your age isnt part of ageing. It's ageism. Everyone deserves to age without limits. Let's make it a reality. Ageism: Notice it - Challenge it - Change it.

When we talk about celebrating ageing, what do we mean? And what has that got to do with challenging ageism? From jokes on birthday cards to #ageist headlines in the media, we unfortunately live in a society where ageing is often seen as something to commiserate - not something to celebrate.

@AgeUK’s new #ActNowAgeBetter campaign prompts us to think about how being more physically active in your 50s/60s can lead to a healthier, more independent later life. This is a great challenge to society’s often negative perceptions around ageing and inevitable decline #PositiveAgeing

Did you know that research tells us that multi-generational teams are more productive and innovative? Older workers bring incredible value to workplaces, yet one in three people aged over 50 believe they have been turned down for a job because of their age.

“When you look at the UK labour market, if you fall out of work & you're older, it's very hard for you to get back" says Kim. “And that is not just about your capability & what you do, it's also about the prejudice that's held in the labour market about what you can do & what you can contribute."

“I often find that people treat me very differently when I tell them how old I am, it can be very patronising”, John told us. “Since turning 70 I feel as though age is merely a number – I still feel the same as I did when I was 48! Unfortunately, this is not how other people feel."

Others assuming that you are less capable, that your opinions are less relevant, that you are too old to be interested in certain things. These are some of the ordinary and everyday assumptions that people can make of others simply because they are older.

‘You look good for your age.’ A back-handed compliment if ever we heard one. Is looking good and looking older incompatible?? When it comes to looks, a sexist double-standard often rears its head as we age: older men are ‘distinguished’ while women with grey hair have ‘let themselves go’.
The image is a close-up of a woman wearing glasses on her head. She also has on a dark-coloured jacket. It promotes International Women's Day on March 8, 2025. There is an "Age without limits" logo in the top right corner. The background includes a blurry person and bikes.

Ageism is bad for everyone. But women can face extra barriers and layers of inequality as they age when sexism combines with ageism. More than one in three (36%) women over 50 say they have been patronised because of their age.

We had so many brilliant responses to our question ‘Are you too old for gigs’ that we had to share just a few! It’s great to see that lots of us aren't feeling inhibited by what others may think we should or shouldn’t be doing because of our age. 1/3
We asked 'are you too old for gigs' and you told us...Never too old! I am in my 70s and have just booked to see The Kings of Leon’ at Lytham festival with my grandson. I’ve seen many wonderful artists live over the years…and hope to see many more. Bruce Springsteen is in his seventies!
It doesn't bother him.
It doesn't bother me either, I'm 76.

🤔 How do you feel about the ways older people are portrayed in the news? 🤔 How often do you see older people in advertising? Are the products being advertised only aimed at older people? 🤔 How do you feel about telling people your age? These are all great questions to ask ourselves & others.

Getting older can have its challenges. Being treated negatively because of your age should never be one of them. We know that once we're over 50 this experience is common. Every area of our life is affected - work, health, friendships and more. But it doesn't have to be this way.
