And the students, both at the high school and the activist leaders, were inspiring. We talked not just about how they fought back, but what they wanted for the future. One student activist said she wanted to be able to live and raise a family in a free Hungary. That's what we all want.

Orban tried to control what teachers can teach. While we visited the schools, they showed us his text books. They called them state text books versus free textbooks. That was striking.

I'm in Hungary this week with several AFT VPs, discussing democracy and how to beat a strongman. We've had meetings with civil society leaders, met with the local teachers union, visited a higher school and discussed the election with student protest leaders.
