The 1970s were a wild time for public employees and their unions. AFSCME continued the push for collective bargaining rights and many locals achieved their first contracts that decade. But not all came without a fight. @afscme.bsky.social @reutherlibrary.bsky.social #LaborHistory #strikes

Lillian shared many stories with me in 2017 when I interviewed her for the archives. It was an honor and honestly astounding to learn about her life's work. I was about 6 months along with my first child and after the interview, she send me a beautiful crocheted blanket. We will cherish it forever.

Note that ArchivesSpace at the @reutherlibrary.bsky.social is for collection *descriptions* not for digitized contents. To search digitized photos and documents (which represent only a tiny fraction of our collections), search wayne.contentdm.oclc.org

archives.wayne.edu this is the most up-to-date source for archival collections at the @reutherlibrary.bsky.social and IMO easier to use for that purpose. If you need search tips we are here for you! AND, since I made this up the other day, here is a handy guide to interpreting your search results.
"ArchivesSpace record navigation aid: Using archives.wayne.edu can be confusing! Search results could be from individual folders, whole collections, or even a single item. Use this guide to help you understand what to request in the Reading Room or for scanning orders" Document contains a screenshot of one result from a search on the website, with different parts ("title" "Collection name" "box and folder numbers" and "part #") labeled, which are described as thus: "Title: either collection, file (aka folder) or item level, as indicated directly below it. Collection name: along with box number, needed for in-person or scan requests. Part #: Not all collections have this, but if they do, include it with your request."

PSA: the @reutherlibrary.bsky.social migrated collection info to #ArchivesSpace long ago, but researchers still reference the old PDFs, which turn up in goolge (b/c they are on our website which we can't update). But you should use archives.wayne.edu for all your collection searches!
Screenshot of archives.wayne.edu, the public user interface for ArchivesSpace at the Walter P. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, Wayne State University. Please use this site for your search of archival collections. Our website (reuther.wayne.edu) is still great for informative blog content, plus all the logistical information you need to know about us, but the collection information it has is no longer being updated.

This memo from Dwight is one of my favorite finds, reaching out through time and space. I now call myself a labor archeologist (?). Also, I can relate to having done work on something only to find it is no longer needed 😂😭 #archives #PayEquity #1980s
Memo with AFSCME letterhead, to Linda Lloyd from Dwight Kirk, dated 7/29/81. Re: Pay Equity Leaflet. Body: "Enclosed is the draft copy and layout for the four-page foldover leaflet ton pay equity.
Even though the original request for the material has already been fulfilled by Phil, I am placing it on file, hoping that someday some labor archeologist (?) will [un]earth it and thereby verify that I was around doing something that could pass for decent work.
But seriously, though, I do believe this material can be useful if we should ever decide perhaps to do a pay equity leaflet that gives each facet of our position enough breathing room to project AFSCME's legacy of meeting new challenges."

OK, I haven't found the original "master" but I did find this first contract from 1971...signed by both Jerry Wurf and Gerald McEntee 👀 👀 The full document, including the cover and signatures, is 19 pages.
Cover page of "Agreement between Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania State American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees and its Council(s) and Locals to be designated." Hand written notes on the page are: "Now under Council 13 Master Agreement" and "Pennsylvania State Trades and Labor 11-4-71 - 6-30-73." Stamped "received Sep 5 1974 AFSCME Department of Research." From the AFSCME Research Department records, Reuther Library, Wayne State University.Signature page from the 1971 AFSCME Pennsylvania state employees agreement. Text at the top reads: "The parties hereto through their daily authorized officers or representatives and intending to be legally bound hereby have hereunto set their hands and seals this 4th day of November, 1971." Signatories include AFSCME International President Jerry Wurf, Gerald McEntee, who would soon become Executive Director of Council 13, and Pennsylvania Governor Milton Shapp. From the AFSCME Research Department records, Reuther Library, Wayne State University.
