There isn't two competing definitions. Live service games are explicitly defined by their monetization element. The updates or online requirements are often a part of it, but not actually relevant to the categorization of the game as a live service.

Even ignoring the research benefits, Artemis is an extremely non-issue program given it not only has good intentions and reasons to exist, it uses barely any funding and actually makes more money back for the economy than what NASA makes in a year.

Yeah, we're in agreement there, and the reason this mission is so critical to be manned instead of an unmanned mission is due to the nature of NASA's VERY strict safety regulations. This is likely due to the failure of Apollo 13 and the fact it was nearly fatal.

The mission profile of Artemis II ensuring it's crewed systems work is so integral that a moon landing mission will not be given the go-ahead without a crewed mission like Artemis II confirming it works. Like it or not, it is necessary due to NASA's strict safety standards and regulations.

Thing is...Artemis is a benefit to our economy, not a detriment unlike Aircraft Carriers and our military budget. The Artemis launch costs $4 billion. The Artemis program produces $23 billion in economic output and almost 100,000 jobs. It's actually NASA's most profitable project for the economy.

But also: Artemis II doesn't have a Lander. They are incredibly complex systems and two companies (one being SpaceX, which hopefully will fail) competing to be the one to develop the lander. SpaceX is theorized for the first missions but might not make it, with the Blue Moon being it's replacement

NASA has only received budget cuts that gets reallocated to military spending year after year. The highest NASA ever got was 4% of the annual federal budget. You can take the last decade of Artemis since 2017, add it together, multiply it by 3, and still be under military spending in a year alone.

NASA has only recieved budget cuts year after year by largely attacks from right wing administrations. NASA and their research is why we know so much about climate change, which they HATE. The Military and defense budget is what needs to be cut, not NASA which is notoriously underfunded.
