Roy Lichtenstein was criticised in the 1960s on for his large-scale paintings "inspired" by comic books, advertisements and mass-produced imagery, for which he withheld acknowledgements & royalties. In this 1973 work, he borrows from his first painting (1961). At El Whitney.

Hot rods typically originate from American cars that have been stripped down and rebuilt to appear to go fast. Bucket style bodies usually have only one bench seat. This street rod, spotted on Bleecker St in Greenwich Village on Friday, has two. And a V8 engine. The chassis suggests it’s a kit car.

Ballet dancers rest while others perform at the Joffrey Ballet School in Greenwich Village. Younger dancers leaving school in the afternoons look like they've been through a lot. All washed out and bent over. The dorm is only two blocks away, but on some days it must feel like a hundred.

John Singer Sargent started this unfinished portrait during a visit to Egypt, 1890-1. Instead of exoticizing his subject, he shows her in modest attire and with an air of elegance and sophistication. At the Orientalist exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum.

Filming for High School Musical going on downstairs, complete with a payphone supplied by the props people. Inside the storefront, being filmed, are a troupe of women dancers dressed in an archaic 1980s Jane Fonda style of brightly colored leotards and bodysuits, topped off by big hair.

Party boats are a frequent source of noise complaints in NYC. This one in the Hudson on a Saturday night has a tired Wolf-of-Wallstreet air about it. Later, one came past with only Italian being spoken. These all seem to be lifestyle businesses, untroubled by mindshare or legitimate profits.

Skyscraper on the left is the Jenga Bld or Jenga Tower. "Houses stacked in the sky" is how the architects describe it. Penthouses: $35M-$45M. At 57 stories, it's the tallest structure in Tribeca. Opened in 2017. In 2022, Gustavo Arnal, then Bed Bath & Beyond's CFO, jumped from the 18th floor.

Parade by Peter Blume, 1930, shows a workman carrying a Medieval suit of armor (or maybe a robot) beneath heavily polluted skies. Speaks to some people's uneasiness with technological progress, if it can be called that. At MoMA - where Blume enjoyed considerable support.

When she was 15-16 and needed money, Jen would take the train into NYC and head straight here to Washington Square, where men would line up to try and impress her. She could make $800 an afternoon. IDK who these people are.
