A healthy economy needs financially resilient communities. The Chancellor says the economy is “turning the corner”. That is welcome news. But an improving economy is not the same as people feeling more financially secure in their day to day lives.
Text reads: Responding to the Chancellor of Exchequer

It’s welcome news that the economy is turning a corner. But for many people across the country, that recovery has yet to be felt in their day-to-day lives.

Our members at AdviceUK, which delivers free and independent advice services, are still seeing unprecedented demand from people struggling with debt, energy bills, housing, benefits and barriers to work. That includes a significant number of young people.

If the Government wants a stronger and more inclusive economy, it must invest in the advice services that help people build financial resilience, overcome barriers to work and training, and prevent manageable problems from escalating into a crisis.

A healthy economy needs resilient communities.

We welcome the Government's commitment to bringing mental health support closer to communities.
Text reads: "We welcome the Government's commitment to bringing mental health support closer to communities.

"But for many young people, poor mental health does not exist in isolation. It is often driven or made worse by debt, insecure housing, problems with welfare benefits or unemployment. Free and independent advice services help people address those underlying issues every day.

"If the Government wants to shift from crisis to prevention, it must invest not only in new mental health facilities, but also in the trusted advice services that help prevent people reaching crisis in the first place."

We welcome the Justice Select Committee's "Access to Justice: Legal Aid" report, which includes several recommendations AdviceUK has long campaigned for, but it must go further: the second report must highlight the importance of the whole advice sector and the crisis it is facing.

"Each year, AdviceUK members advise 2.8 million people across Britain, including marginalised groups who would otherwise remain excluded from the justice system. That is why independent advice must be recognised and funded as part of the UK’s essential justice infrastructure."
