One year into the federal occupation of DC, the facts are clear: this was never about safety. It was about control and the criminalization of Black and brown communities.

We are in a national school closure crisis. But school closures aren’t inevitable — and they aren’t a solution to budget deficits. School districts should listen to communities calling for real investments in education and actual solutions to the fiscal issues they face. Read more: wapo.st/4pJwTkU

Requiring documentary proof of citizenship is cost-prohibitive for many low-income Americans, moving us back to the poll taxes and literacy tests defeated decades ago through the Twenty Fourth Amendment and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Tell your Senator to vote NO on the SAVE America Act.
The current cost of a passport book is $165. This is cost-prohibitive for many low-income Americans, moving us back to the poll taxes and literacy tests defeated decades ago through the Twenty Fourth Amendment and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.Take action! Tell Congress to vote NO on the SAVE America Act. Call 202-224-3131. No New Jim Crow.

This bill could block tens of millions of eligible citizens from voting.

This will create an added hoop of difficulty for Black, Brown, low-income, disabled, and LGBTQIA+ people, as well as millions of married women who may not have an ID that reflects their current name.

The current cost of a passport book is $165 for adults which is cost-prohibitive for many low-income people. No New Jim Crow

There are currently significant delays in getting passports due to cuts to the federal workforce that processes passport applications, which could lead to greater impediments to voting.

States already have adequate tools available to verify that voters are who they say they are. Election officials already use extensive state and federal data to verify an individual’s eligibility to cast a ballot.

A new investigation from @propublica.org found over 40 cases of federal immigration agents using chokeholds against immigrants, citizens, and protesters. This same deadly use of neck restraints sparked a rallying cry for justice in 2020 after George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police.
After George Floyd’s murder by a police officer six years ago in Minneapolis — less than a mile from where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Renee Good last week — police departments and federal agencies banned chokeholds and other moves that can restrict breathing or blood flow.

But those tactics are back, now at the hands of agents conducting President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign.

How do I prepare for the possibility of running into ICE at school?

Make a family safety plan. Know what you will do if someone in your family is detained.

Update your school emergency card to make sure a trusted adult is listed as an emergency contact.

Memorize important phone numbers and addresses in case you can’t access your phone.

Talk to a trusted school staff member and ask them to find out if your school has a protocol for ICE visits. How do I prepare for the possibility of running into ICE at school?

Form a rapid response team at your school. Invite students and trusted adults.

Host Know Your Rights workshops.

Design a safety plan and assign roles in case of an incident: who will monitor ICE activity, inform families, document safely, and coordinate responses.

Create an emergency Signal group to quickly share information if ICE is spotted near the school.

The nonpartisan Election Assistance Commission (EAC) has been asked to amend the federal voter registration form to require Americans to provide unnecessary documentary proof of citizenship when registering to vote. This is a blatant attempt to suppress the vote and creates a modern day poll tax.
What's Happening: America First Legal, cofounded by Stephen Miller, has asked the nonpartisan Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to require Americans to provide documentary proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

If this rule is adopted, the EAC would amend the federal voter registration form to include redundant and unnecessary proof of citizenship requirements. Why does this matter: This change would prevent millions of eligible American citizens from registering or re-registering to vote by requiring them to show their passport or birth certificate.

This will create an added hoop of difficulty for Black, Brown, disabled, and LGBTQIA+ people who may not have an ID that reflects their current name.
