this completely ignores that most survivors of sexual violence are harmed by people known to them -- family, partners, teachers, mentors. asking people to endorse harm done to people they may still hold complex feelings about, or they're not a perfect victim, is an act of harm.

jco is afraid of love, for really good reasons. but she has externalized that fear and intellectualized it to the point of disdain for anyone who revels in it. as amusing as i find her twitter shenanigans, she doesn't speak to people like someone with an abundance of love in her life.

because jco is my parasocial nemesis, i know a lot about her and her past relationships. she's a deeply lonely woman who fell hard and fast for her first husband. she was suicidal and near catatonic for months when he died. when she remarried, her second husband died only 10 years later.

the breadth and depth of romance publishing, in all its subgenre variations, understands that the circumstances of love are often less than ideal and picturesque and it treats all of those circumstances as equally valuable. this, i think, defies the clinical & detached attitude "real" writers feign.

i think a lot of people view love, or rather loving love, as a weakness they've ascended beyond in their pursuit of literary greatness. people talk about, and around, love in litfic and more "respected" genres like it's an experimental outcome. romance understands love as profoundly messy.

interestingly, these conversations rarely take on the same kind of venomous loathing when discussing genres like horror, crime, and sci-fi. there's certainly an undercurrent of misogyny to this (which we have discussed, at length on p&p), but i have a belief that the real sticking point is love.

all genre fic is formulaic because the formula is what establishes genre conventions. that is neither good, nor bad, it just is. litfic purists, especially romance detractors, view (enjoying) predictability as evidence of a moral failure and it's just... not.

this is, of course, understandable but it also means a bunch of strangers are yelling at each other every time someone opens their mouth (or app) to share an opinion. consequently, a lot of people are disclosing their past abuse to a prurient audience of millions who do not wish them well.

one of the more unfortunate side effects of rape culture, and the prevalence of sexual assault, is that many people feel as though they have an entirely unique perspective on the concept which confers absolute authority to speak on it. this makes a lot of people extremely touchy about the subject.
