The 4D complexity of the seismic swarm is hard to capture in figures, so we made a short 5-min explainer video (subtitles in Portuguese & Spanish): www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKOn... Great to co-lead this with @pablojglez.bsky.social. Thanks to everyone involved.

Our new paper on a stealthy magma intrusion in the Azores is now out in Nature Communications: www.nature.com/articles/s41... We show how volcanic dikes intruding into faults can both speed up magma ascent and prevent eruption at the surface.

Fault-mediated magma propagation and triggered seismicity revealed by the 2022 São Jorge Azores unrest - Nature Communications
A study of 18,000 earthquakes during a failed 2022 Azores eruption shows that crustal faults can both guide rising magma and halt its ascent. The magma stalled 1.6 km underground, triggering a months-...

NEW: Magma is a furious mixture of molten rock, crystals and gases. It normally makes lots of noise—but, in 2022, a huge volume of magma snuck up on an island in the Azores without making a sound. Yep: magma has a stealth mode. Me @sciam.bsky.social www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-vo...

A volcanic mystery reveals that rising magma has a stealth mode
In 2022 a swarm of earthquakes in the Azores suggested that an eruption was imminent, but none happened. Now we know why, and it means magma can be sneakier than we knew

That's a warp on a very fruitful #IAVCEI2025 week in Geneva, Switzerland! Despite the heat wave across Europe, we hung on strong. It was great to catch-up with "old" friends, meet new colleagues and motivated ECRs. Thanks to everyone for the many interesting discussions about volcanoes 🌋
