New work led by @moazshoura.bsky.social, with Jon Cant and a wonderful student team. How does the other-race effect change when we view faces in groups? Combining EEG decoding and generative reconstruction, we find that viewing context changes its neural expression.

Congratulations to @moazshoura.bsky.social on successfully defending his PhD! Thanks to @ccnlab.bsky.social, Kang Lee, @drmack.bsky.social, Jon Cant and @dirkbwalther.bsky.social for their thoughtful questions and feedback. Pictured here with Jon Cant and @drmack.bsky.social after the defense

Excited to share this new Cognition paper led by Arijit De. The work provides a nice example of how computational models and image reconstruction can be used to probe the structure and biases of self representations. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

The self as an image: Appearance and belief in visual representations of one's own face
Self-representations are central to cognition, yet their internal structure and visual fidelity remain poorly understood. We combined behavioral and c…

Why do we struggle to tell apart faces of other races? New #psynomBRM paper by Shoura @moazshoura.bsky.social , Walther & Nestor @adriannestor.bsky.social uses GAN-based “knockout faces” to reveal what info we miss. #FaceRecognition 👉

The case of the missing information: Reconstructed faces and hy the other race effect happens
Ever confuse two people you’ve met, particularly if they’re both of a different race than you are? It’s likely that part of why this is hard for you is the Other Race Effect, where we find people w…

Excited to share my 1st Bluesky post: 2 studies reveal age biases in other-race face perception using GAN reconstruction and EEG. Congratulations to @moazshoura.bsky.social for this research - in collaboration with @dirkbwalther.bsky.social | www.eurekalert.org/news-release...

Researchers harness brain activity to look at how we perceive faces from other racial groups differently
Researchers at U of T Scarborough have used brain activity and AI to reveal why we have a tough time recognizing facial details of people from other races.
