Italy hasn’t made a good large car since the Fiat130 in about 1971….

I truly believe the saxophone is a honking nightmare, designed to be played outdoors in marching bands and not fit for human ears anywhere else. However, in Jess Gilliam’s hands it turns into something joyful. The woman is a genius.

In the UK it started as a freeby sticker sold with baby products. New parents couldn’t not share their joy, so stuck them In their car windows. How many people actually pay for those little signs I wonder - not many?

If you’re proper left, it’s ‘arsehole’. ‘Asshole’ suggests you’re American - and ‘left’ simply means you don’t want to marry your pickup truck.

I think it was the Tories who gave them all those seats, not Ed Davey. Just as with Starmer, there wasn’t anywhere near enthusiasm for the man - what people really wanted was to be rid of the Tories.

Yeah, I think I might baulk at the blatant antisemitism, even if it is, as you say, good for the clicks.

I once walked out of an Italian restaurant because the lighting was so bright and harsh. It set me on edge immediately and after a couple of minutes I said “I can’t bear this” and walked out.

He’s at the end of his political career. There’s not much more for him there. They’ll be paying him staggering amounts - it’s not hard to convince yourself of the merits of their case when life-changing money is on the table…

I still see her as intensely unlikeable, which is a problem in politics. Plenty of right wing Tories are probably quite decent company (Gove is probably a giggle if you’re in the mood), but she always seems spiteful, mannered and charmless.

It wasn’t your comment I was saying was inaccurate, btw. It was the one telling us that each *beneficiary* has a tax free allowance of £325k.

Adrian Lenard @adrianlenard.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Who’s “we”? I accepted it decades ago and so did all but one of my mates. He took a while but he’s got there now. There are an awful lot of ‘hair systems’ on telly I’ll grant you - and yes I know there are arseholes out there who don’t but they’re no one’s problem but there own…

When I die there will be a massive IHT bill, thanks to house prices and the fact that my pension pot will be counted as part of my estate after 2027. I couldn’t give a shit. I won’t need it anymore. I’ll leave a bit to family members and beyond that, I’m quite happy for it to go to the exchequer
020
Adrian Lenard @adrianlenard.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
That’s not accurate. Each deceased estate can pass on a total of £325k free of IHT to one or more beneficiaries. Anything in the estate over £325k is taxed at 40%. A married couple can each benefit from the £325k allowance and there are some additional allowances in some circumstances…

Clearly what’s needed is for someone called Hugo, fresh from Oxford, to present these ideas (as his own, obviously, because that’s how privilege works). No one will sneer then. (Not saying you’re sneering, Mark - but I do think the OP is more than a little erm, lofty in his account…)

Yeah. He won’t be. America is incapable of standing up to barefaced corruption at the highest level. Even places like The Philippines look at modern America and think “Christ, I’m not trusting that lot”.

Anyone who thinks he will meekly follow the will of the people has been hiding in a cave since 2016. Of course he’s going to cheat - if he actually allows a vote to take place which I very much doubt …

The old people she’s talking to will remember British Leyland. They probably all bought a Maxi in 1974… as for the young and middle-aged voters she needs to woo, they’ll not have a clue. Or care.

Why would anyone *not* care about a decline in basic manners? Life’s crowded, rushed and hard enough, and simple courtesies like a smile, a please and a thank-you are more important now than they’ve ever been. So you carry on caring, and I will too…

At heart, most of us are little people who just want to be liked and respected, aren’t we? Most of us try being nice and decent and diligent to achieve it. He’s a rabble-rouser - and they are driven by a need for control, not respect. So fuck him.

The next election should be at roughly the time when a parade of liars, cheats and cowboys are in court over the killing of 72 innocent people in Grenfell Tower. So I’m sure deregulation of the building industry will be a hugely popular move by then. They really are that stupid, it seems…

It’ll be the same stretching of the truth that Tories use to claim an “ordinary, hardworking’ heritage by finding a great-aunt who wasn’t a lawyer or accountant. There’ll be a grain of truth there, surrounded by a load of exaggeration and mythology.

My Mum used to be like that with her friends sometimes. I used to bemoan her terrible listening skills, but wound my neck in when she often recounted precisely what her friend had been saying. It really doesn’t work for me, but it seemed to work for them…
