Check out Ayaka’s talk on Tuesday afternoon about a performance profiler she made for accelerator design languages. It makes these cycle-count flamegraphs: al.radbox.org/doi/10.1145/3839509
Figure 4 from the paper, which is a flamegraph. The caption says:

Flame graph from running Petal on the program in Figure 2. Elements that occur in parallel are normalized relative to the total length, so that summing up all threads result in the total length of the par block. Elements within the s1 cell are omitted for space.

I was already controlling for performance anomalies related to layout within the executable. But I have a repro where making a byte-exact copy of an executable occasionally (about 10%) of the time will create a program that runs significantly slower (5-10%) than the original because of where it […]

@wingo got it. sorry if this is totally unhelpful, but the way I was trying to think of it was: consider B a local variable in the *parent*; is it dead right after the use of B that the closure creation constitutes? i.e., yes in this case: () => { const B = {}; B.val = 1; B.val = 2; const F = […]

@wingo just to clarify: what we need to know is that B can never be mutated after the closure definition point, right? (so it suffices to prove that B is dead there, but that is probably too conservative)

A Fake Shell for Pangenomics
To make our library for efficient pangenomics more palatable, I made a little Unix shell. It “cheats” when it sees commands that invoke other pangenomic CLI tools and runs built-in functionality instead. The shell is built around an instruction-based IR that can fluidly intermix shell-like I/O (files and pipes) with efficient in-memory data structures. In a debatably fair comparison, the fake shell runs one shell script 48× faster than running it with sh.

seems insensitive of CACM to publicly post someone’s AI psychosis? cacm.acm.org/blogcacm/i-spent-a-yea…
It started almost by accident. At my startup Dwelly, I constantly push the limits of what AI tools can actually do. One day I just typed into a chat: “Can you prove P ≠ NP?”—referring to the problem the math community has been stuck on for decades.Where I Am Now

I have a complete formalization of the P ≠ NP problem. All major publications have been analyzed and translated into code. I have an overall proof structure and a small number of clearly identified gaps: assumptions under which the problem is already solved. My current focus is turning those assumptions into proven statements.

Verilog is the foundation of all hardware design, and it is fatally flawed. We should all be worried about a glut of hardware bugs caused by Verilog’s unpredictable semantics and simplistic type system.

I-structures: data structures for parallel computing
It is difficult to achieve elegance, efficiency, and parallelism simultaneously in functional programs that manipulate large data structures. We demonstrate this through careful analysis of program examples using three common functional data-structuring approaches-lists using Cons, arrays using Update (both fine-grained operators), and arrays using make-array (a “bulk” operator). We then present I-structure as an alternative and show elegant, efficient, and parallel solutions for the program examples in Id, a language with I-structures. The parallelism in Id is made precise by means of an operational semantics for Id as a parallel reduction system. I-structures make the language nonfunctional, but do not lose determinacy. Finally, we show that even in the context of purely functional languages, I-structures are invaluable for implementing functional data abstractions.
