“And I have depended on yours, through some very tough times,” I said, my voice already rough with emotion. I pushed ahead. I had to expel the burning lump of grief in my chest before it burst. “I failed you. I failed the trust J109 and Probe1 placed in us. It’s okay if you’re angry...” I was forced to stop as my throat clogged with unshed tears.
“What?” His head jerked around in shock, ears flat. “How could? Why?” Then his arms were around me. He pulled me close, tight enough that I could feel the rumble in his chest as he spoke. “I am the one who pushed for us to start hatching J110, when I didn’t fully understand the conditions on Earth. I was so desperate to revive part of Hakan, and to strike back at the Harvesters, that I placed my own feelings over the wellbeing of a child.” It was his turn to drop silent while he gasped and shuddered with sobs. Hakanni didn’t leak tears in grief the way humans did.
Afterward, he rested his head on my shoulder, the fuzzy tip of his ear lightly tickling my forehead. It reminded me of the times I cuddled up to him when I was young to tell him my secret fears. Maybe he remembered too because his next words were rough with grief, and shame.
“Oh, Emily.” He groaned. “I can’t believe I told a child that they had to hide and starve if they wanted to survive.” He sounded lost and defeated. “We must not try the hatching again until the Harvester is defeated and we can move openly. When we have enough backing to provide all our baby needs.”
I understood now. His leaving the table wasn’t anger at us, it was his realization that no Earth government would provide what he needed to restore this last child of Hakan. I held him close until his shudders finally subsided and he lay still, breathing softly in sleep. I sat for long hours, stroking the longer fur on his head, tears leaking down my cheeks. For him, for little J110, for Hakan, and for the lost soul of humanity that barely thought twice about condemning children to death every day.
