My personal highlight of The Traitors was Ross Kemp trying to immediately assert himself as being James Blunt's equal as bossy army man

I see you thought this sounded as unmissable as I did

There's maybe be a quite good Final Destination movie in a premise where the death spares someone innocent in the chair, they get executed the second time, and then for the rest of the movie death slowly take out everyone who worked to defy him

I've had the opportunity to block a lot of terminally online weirdos with a severe case of poster's brain though, so that's something

I know there's a lot of UAE diplomacy stuff atm means Burnham has quite a hard needle to thread, but really it doesn't need Burnham, the Premier League should be able to do it themselves

This would be quite a good time to make that a proper rule

@blurbfly.bsky.social @bendunnell.bsky.social I think it's very sad that we can't have a good faith discussion about the politics of immigration with people who mostly agree with each other, but I hope the screengrabbing and making stuff up makes you feel very superior behind your computer screens

A very persuasive response. Anyway, we're clearly not getting anywhere so let's leave this. Again, have a nice day.

Ben, I have no interest in spending all day dealing with people I've not engaged in conversation being rude at me. Please grow up.

Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Can you delete this please? I've tried to end this conversation amicably, but now you're trying to start a pile-on because I've had the temerity to disagree with you. You're a professor for goodness sake.

It's a bit of a tell that you haven't spent much time in India and are only imagining a romanticised version if you don't. Indeed, it's quite a colonial way of looking at the world (see, we can all infer that the people who disagree with us are racists if we want, but it's not helpful).

Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
But it can also be acknowledgment that immigration from culturally similar and economically developed countries imposes different costs to immigration from culturally distant and less developed countries. I think that's something we need to be honest about in any discussion about immigration

Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Well, you decided to involve yourself before you've had a coffee, so that's on you. But that's not true. Seeing a difference between EU and non-EU immigration *can* be racist of course (it certainly is for some people, though I think disproportionately online)...
500
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I think that's a bit of a reach tbh, but you're perfectly welcome to find it icky if you want. The need for concessions is decided entirely by political arithmetic. If there was a national majority for liberal immigration rules, we wouldn't be having this conversation. But alas, there isn't

(Anyway, muting this now, I don't envy your mentions column. Have a nice day)

Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Ok. I agree that's a perfectly reasonable, logical and defendable position. But it's one that makes rejoin politically impossible, because rejoin will need support from the large chunk of the population who don't have such liberal views on immigration

Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I would like you to tell me the specific sentence where Andy Burnham says he prefers white immigration
100
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Firstly, the "brown/white" thing is entirely liberal people choosing to interpret Burnham's words that way, he says nothing of the sort. Secondly, if the argument that "European integration is easier to manage than non-European immigration" is morally objectionable, rejoin is dead in the water
500
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I think your approach of "convince people to come around to your argument by patronising them" is going to work as well with me as it is with the public
100
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Let's role play. You're Andy Burnham, you know that to have any chance of rejoin (with Schengen) working, you need consensus across the political spectrum, including the centre-right. What's your pitch to them?
500
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Where does Burnham do that?
100
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
You're making a (perfectly valid) technical policy argument, but Burnham's trying to build a narrative. He's selling the public vibes, not detail.
100
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I mean, personally I'm such a metropolitan cliché that I'd have the most liberal immigration policy humanly possible. But I also recognise that politics is the art of actually getting things done. There's no rejoin without a centre-right consensus that favours it.
100
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
He at no point says "white", that's entirely your inference
310
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Calling the British public racist is really going to work to persuade them to rejoin the EU, of course
310
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Kindly, if you think this is pandering to racism/xenophobia then you're so far away from the public on this that your judgement is impaired. This is Burnham trying to frame the argument in a way that meets a lot of voters where they are, and he does it well imo

I'm watching The Mandalorian and Grogu and it's remarkable how much it suffers from the terrible decision to have Rotta the Hut speak English (and to have Jeremy Allen White, of all people, do the voice)

Re the England game - in a world where people increasingly can't trust their eyes or believe in a shared reality, I very strongly believe we shouldn't let broadcasters surreptitiously replace real pitchside ads with fake digital ones

You can feel the desperation in that tweet. Polanski simply doesn't have an answer for a Labour government doing Labour things (the answer should be "we need to do more and we need to do it faster" imo)
120
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
There's now some obvious "we need to further, faster" white space for the Greens to position themselves if they want to keep their new metropolitan voters. Becoming the party of pensioners is not it
000
Alex Wilson @adjwilson.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
This is absolutely dogshit stuff. Polanski has no answer for a Labour government actually doing left-leaning things. His goose is cooked

I'm reading about the Buffalo Bills' new stadium. The taxpayer paid $850m to it, the average game ticket is $610, and season ticket holders at the old stadium had to pay a one-off fee of $750- $50,000 for the *right* to pay *more* money and buy their new season ticket. Seriously, WHAT IS THE USA?

This article is poor and riddled with factual errors. I'm fed-up of football journalists totally ignoring the Fan-Led Review, and the lower and non-league clubs that lobbied to have an alcohol pilot included as a financial lifeline to stop them going bust www.theguardian.com/football/202...

It's a huge management failure that the FA has a strategy around training age group teams to play possession football (literally called "The England DNA") that the senior team coach doesn't believe in. If Tuchel doesn't buy into the strategy, he shouldn't be in the job inews.co.uk/sport/footba...
