Different designs answer different questions and should be judged by how well they match the question asked. Cross-sectional networks provide meaningful evidence when interpreted for what they actually estimate, and criticism should focus on unsupported inferences rather than the design itself.

As a reviewer, whenever I see a recommendation along the lines of "this should be studied longitudinally", I often ask "why?" and "how would you exactly do this?". Not everything can be measured longitudinally and even when it's theoretically possible, it doesn't always make sense.

In an audit of 157 network papers across three journals, 65% of eligible cross-sectional network studies explicitly named cross-sectional design as a limitation, and 68% recommended longitudinal research as a remedy.

Are we criticizing unsupported inferences, or are we starting to rank entire study designs? I argue that we’re increasingly doing the latter, when we should be doing the former.

I've been noticing that “cross-sectional” has become shorthand for “methodologically weak” in (network) research, and often data being cross-sectional is treated as a methodological objection in itself. I took some time to put my thoughts down in writing. Pre-print: osf.io/preprints/ps... 🧵⬇️
