🗳️ Accessible voting starts with accessible voter education! Yesterday, Judge James Cooper of Macon County showed participants how to use the ExpressVote accessible voting machine. Attendees also participated in a focus group about how we can help more people exercise their right to vote. 🗣️💬
At a voter education event, a presenter in a gray suit leans beside a seated participant wearing a bright pink shirt and demonstrates an ExpressVote accessible voting machine. The participant faces the machine’s touchscreen while the presenter points toward the machine’s controls. Another attendee sits nearby, and part of a League of Women Voters table covering is visible in the foreground.

Every child deserves to play, learn, and grow up in safe, loving homes — in their own community. Not segregated in institutions. Today, that's one step closer to reality for kids with disabilities in Alabama's foster system. 🧵
LEGAL VICTORY

ADVOCATES CELEBRATE
SETTLEMENT TO END ALABAMA'S
ILLEGAL INSTITUTIONALIZATION
OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
STAND UP FOR KIDS

Disability Rights are Human RightsCHILDREN HAVE A RIGHT TO MENTAL
HEALTH SERVICES - AND TO LIVE AND
GROW IN THE LEAST RESTRICTIVE
SETTING, WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
A federal judge has approved a settlement
agreement establishing new safeguards to
protect children with mental health
disabilities in Alabama's foster system
against unnecessary institutionalization.
Children placed in psychiatric residential
treatment facilities (PRTFs) are isolated
from their communities and loved ones -
where they're more likely to languish,
separated from siblings, and
for abuse and neglect.UNDER THE SETTLEMENT, THE
STATE OF ALABAMA MUST:
Institute standardized assessments for
children at risk of PRTF placement,
requiring a doctor to sign off.

Strengthen Individualized Service
Planning (ISP) through six-month
quality reviews to ensure children's
care plans meet professional standards.

Whenever possible, place children in
community and family settings,
ensuring that group placements do not
exceed 7% of those in state custody. For far too long, children with
disabilities in Alabama's foster care
system have been separated from
their communities and denied
meaningful childhood experiences.
THE APPROVED SETTLEMENT MARKS
A NECESSARY SHIFT TOWARDS
INTEGRATION, PAVING THE WAY FOR
ALL CHILDREN TO LEARN, PLAY AND
GROW IN THEIR COMMUNITIES - NOT
INSTITUTIONS.

What issues do you care about most? Chances are, they’re on the ballot this year. State and local elections will determine these issues for your community, and make a real impact on your everyday life. ADAP celebrated National Disabilities Voter Registration Week this past weekend in Huntsville!
A graphic reads, “Know Your Rights. Know Your Power.” The body text of the graphic reads: “Vote privately and independently; Vote in a way that is accessible to you; tip: if you vote in person, ask to use the accessible voting machine or ballot marking device!; Get help with any part of the voting process from a person you choose; Note: States may have rules about who can or cannot help you vote. Check your state laws when you make your plan.” The graphic features an image of a young Black woman with red dreads in a manual wheelchair. She wears a REV UP t-shirt and is holding a sign that says, “I vote because why not me”A Black person, a white person, and three Asian people pose together smiling at the camera. They are all wearing REV UP t-shirts. Above them is the title “Every Election Your Vote Matters.” Below their photo is a text box that reads: Local politics shape our lives: state officials decide how Medicaid and Medicare work; city councils and city officials make decisions around transportation, housing, parks, policing and more; School boards decide program funding and education policies.” A banner at the bottom reads: Disability Voting Rights Week, aapd.com/disability-voting-rights-week.
Voting Rights Advocate Nicky Watkins at the ADAP table, smiling for the camera - the table is covered in ADAP flyers, stickers, and other assorted items. Pictured also is the RevUp banner. RevUp is the American Association for People with Disabilities (AAPD) voter education and registration coalition, of which ADAP (among others) is a proud member!A family of people, all with disabilities, who came to the market and were very excited to learn about our presence there. (Not pictured are another family member and a grandmother, also with disabilities, but a little camera-shy!)

Cartoon image of a Black woman in a wheelchair, with a colorful bubble that says "CAP" and shows two hands shaking one another. The bubble has cartoon arms, and one is reaching around another colorful bubble that says "Vocational Rehabilitation" (implying CAP can help you work with VR to get what you need).
