José Cerbón "¡Salve Hidalgo!" [Music score]; México: Librería Viuda de Bouret, [1910]. Stanford Manuscripts Collection: MISC 1629. Father Miguel Hidalgo, rebel priest and leading force fighting for Mexico's independence from Spain. https://stanford.io/2YAX6rGEl Rayo del Sur [Movie poster, 1943]. Stanford Manuscripts Collection: M0945 Box 6. *José María Morelos y Pavón (1765-1815). Born into a poor family and most likely had Indian and African blood on his mother's side. He was a student of Hidalgo and joined rebel forces shortly after the Grito de Dolores and assumed the insurgent leadership after the execution of Hidalgo.

In 1813 Morelos convened the Chilpancingo National Assembly where he proclaimed Mexico’s independent from Spain. He was captured in November of 1815 and executed a month later after facing a military court and an Inquisition trial.

He is depicted here in the 1943 movie poster as the heroic Rayo del sur or Southern ThunderboltLobby card for the 1948 film La Perla. It was simultaneously shot in Spanish & English with John Steinbeck, author of the original novel co-author of the script with acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Emilio Fernández, who directed the film. Stanford Libraries, Mexican lobby card collection, 1937-1977. https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/4328787.Libro de cocina (2024). Guadalajara, Jalisco, México : Taller Gráfica de Comala. Artist book edition of introductory sonnet and cooking recipes attributed to Juana Inés de la Cruz previously published in 1979 by Talleres de la Enciclopedía de México. Book encased in detachable outer cover with introductory text by Sol Rubín de la Borbolla stitched to fold-out flap beneath ornate protective sheet resembling a napkin with lace doily patterns. Similar sheet tipped in at end of cookbook covering text and small round version serving as support for cover title of Prólogo. Book composed and manually printed by Nacho Gómez Arriola.

Johnson's Central America By Johnson & Browning. (with) five inset maps: Isthmus of Panama, Harbor Of San Juan De Nicaragua, The "Nicaragua Route", Manzanilla I. "This publication is 15 portraits of Guatemalan women taken between 1989-2013. It includes 15 signed photographs taken and printed on Ilford warm tone white 100% rag paper by Daniel Chauche in his Antigua Guatemala laboratory, a coversheet with essay about the work by Guatemalan historian-sociologists Carol Zardetto and Luis Aceituno, a title list of all pencil-signed images inside a clamshell case crafted from archival book cloth, Guatemalan indigenous woman's skirt fabric, and archival paper. Each photograph is in a mylar sleeve."--Publisher's description. Copy 1 of 20 with 15 signed gelatin silver photographs in mylar sleeves held in a red cloth box lined with Guatemalan textiles. Image: Daniel Chauche https://danielchauche.com/331/Ernesto Cardenal, Pablo Pupiro Mercado, Camila Pupiro, & Inés Klissenbauer. Nueve epigramas y un salmo = Nine epigrams and a psalm. Matagalpa, Nicaragua: EDITION SCHWARZE SEITE. 2025.
Nicaraguan artist Pablo Pupiro Mercado, co-founder of the Matagalpa Printshop TALLER CONTIL, illustrated this book by Ernesto Cardenal. A celebrated priest and poet of liberation theology, Cardenal is regarded as one of Nicaragua’s greatest literary figures, though he is currently considered persona non grata under the Ortega dictatorship. In celebration of Cardenal's 100th birthday, Mercado selected nine epigrams and a psalm for this publication, honoring the poet's enduring legacy. https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/in00000928938Merida, Carlos and Zadik, Byron. Trajes indígenas de Guatemala; 10 láminas a color por Carlos Merida. Guatemala City, Guatemala, Byron Zadik y Cia., [1950].
Image from portfolio of Merida lithographs documenting the traditional indigenous costumes of several regions of Guatemala, issued by the house of Zadik, which specialized in striking, culturally accurate visual works representing Guatemalan life. Zadik y Cia worked with a number of artists and photographers and became well known for intensely colorful suites of postcards recording daily Guatemalan customs and landscapes. They were arguably the first Central American printing house to use and credit women photographers, publishing work by Helen Williams (a 1940s–50s National Geographic photographer) and Joya Heirs, a Guatemalan-born artist, alongside the extensive photographic output of Julio Zadik, whose credited work extends into the late 1970s and suggests a publishing activity spanning at least five decades.

Carlos Merida (born Carlos Santiago Ortega in Guatemala City in 1893) was a central figure in twentieth-century Central American art, best known for his large-scale mural projects and paintings. Closely aligned with the Mexican muralists in spirit and palette, his work often adopts a distinctive, quasi-cubist geometry and incorporates applied media such as glass, local ceramics, and mosaic. Like Rivera, Orozco, and Gerardo Murillo, Merida was committed to preserving and elevating an indigenous aesthetic, centering Guatemalan folklore, history, and everyday life within a modern visual language.

Opening today @stanfordulibraries.bsky.social: #AllenGinsberg Centenary Exhibition tinyurl.com/mr3pcspv. Check it Out!🏳️‍🌈Read abt his 1959 trip to South America in image description OR tinyurl.com/5783bwre.
Nov/1959, Fernando Alegría, Chilean professor of Latin American literature at Berkeley, invited Ginsberg & Lawrence Ferlinghetti to participate in a literary conference at the University of Concepción in Santiago. Familiar w/ a burgeoning literary scene in the Bay Area, Alegría had published one of the earliest Spanish translations of “Howl” in 1957 and wanted to introduce the Beats to a South American audience. Ginsberg’s appearance at the conference and his subsequent poetry readings in Santiago publicized the Beat Generation's work in South America, where its influence would become significant. Ginsberg's work reached a broader Latin American audience through El Corno Emplumado (The Feathered Horn), a bilingual avant-garde literary magazine published in Mexico from 1962 to 1969.

After leaving Chile, Ginsberg traveled to Bolivia and Peru, where he explored Machu Picchu, nearby Cuzco, and Lima before traveling deep into the Peruvian Amazon to Pucallpa. Ginsberg’s trek was inspired by William S. Burroughs, who had traveled to Peru seven years earlier in search of the hallucinogenic vine ayahuasca, or “yage” as he referred to it. In Pucallpa, Ginsberg found a local curandero, who administered ayahuasca in a ritual ceremony. Ginsberg’s journals document in vivid detail his ayahuasca experiences, which he later incorporated into the poem “Magic Psalm."

While traveling in Peru, Ginsberg also wrote several letters to William S. Burroughs about his experiences. These letters, alongside Burroughs’s letters from seven years earlier, were compiled, with some license, into an experimental narrative, The Yage Letters, published by City Lights in 1963. An unusual hybrid of epistolary narrative and experimental cut-up technique, The Yage Letters serves as a travelogue and early manifestation of the counterculture’s quest for expanded consciousness.

Poster for pop-up exhibit Special, Unique, and Rare: FOOD & BEVERAG. Growing, providing, preparing, sharing, and consuming food are all essential for human life. At the most fundamental, biological level, food sustains life by delivering nutrients and staving off hunger. But the ways people eat and the ways they think about food, as well as what people eat -- and don't eat -- are strongly influenced by culture, ritual, ethics, climate, geography, technology, and economics.

Drop by Hohbach 123 (Silicon Valley Archive classroom, Green Library) any time between 2-4 PM on Tuesday, April 14th to partake in a curated tasting menu of Special, Unique, and Rare delicacies from the Libraries' collections that have something to say about FOOD & BEVERAGE.Libro de cocina. Accordion folded sheet with silkscreen images bound in leather with linoleum printed carving and clasps made of carved deer antler. “This book draws an analogy between the pre-Hispanic Tzompantli (skull rack) and the violence in Mexico of the recent past. It contains the names of the places with the highest rates of violence in Mexico, which are joined together to form a single, endless word. This word is a metaphor for the unity and strength of society; by acknowledging the violence and reading the word, it functions as a kind of mantra that helps heal the pain of the people.” Copy 3 of 10 signed by the artist. https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/10084297. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753-1811). He was a middle-class criollo (a Spaniard born in the New World). In 1803 he became head of the parish of Dolores in the present central state of Guanajuato. His intellectual and political curiosity led him to become involved in the tertulias, or literary societies familiar with Enlightenment ideas in early 19th century Mexico, which were to become precursors to the fight for independence. At one of those gatherings a conspiracy to rebel in December of 1810 was planned, but it had to be carried out on September 16, 1810 after the plot was uncovered.

Hidalgo’s fight for independence was short-lived. He fell in a royalist ambush and was defrocked, tried, and executed in the Northern city of Chihuahua in July of 1811. As an early martyr of Mexico’s fight for independence he is considered Padre de la Patria or Father of the Nation and is depicted as a heroic figure in this 1910 Independence Centennial music score.José María Morelos y Pavón (1765-1815). He was born into a poor family and most likely had Indian and African blood on his mother's side.

He is depicted here in the 1943 movie poster as the heroic Rayo del sur or Southern Thunderbolt.
