Milo believed in the Tollbooth, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter — tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. And one fine morning — So we beat on, booths against the current, borne back ceaselessly into Dictionopolis.

Fascinating account of "Rave and Let Die" here: by no means altogether positive. But some interesting observations on the function of criticism in the present time.

Very odd, almost aggressively inconsequential non-mystery. Late Innes prosaic elegance, but no "there" there.

As a survey contextualising a number of literary masterpieces (Eliot, Dickens, Trollope, Tennyson & others) in a fine-grained, fascinating account of the culture, history & world of Britain in the final year of the 1850s, it could not be bettered. Highly recommended. www.foyles.co.uk/book/britain...

First in a new series: great mathematicians and their even greater hats. Today: David Hilbert.
A photograph of German mathematician David Hilbert (1862 – 1943) at the age of 50. He is still quite boyish-faced, despite his goatee and moustache; prominent ears and a spectacles. Fully one half of the image is taken up with a tall soft-looking pale hat wide-brimmed, with a fat black band. A summer hat, one would think.

I was shocked to learn that Jeffrey Archer died before completing payment on the 3000 first-edition copies of my forthcoming FRANKENSTEIN REX, which he planned to buy in tribute to my excellence as a stalwart of UK SF.

The first Anne Carson I read was "Autobiography of a Red", when it came out in 1998. Since then I've been avid fan #1: "Beauty of the Husband" is excellent & the Herakles riff "Red Doc>" perhaps her best of all. This NYTimes profile gives something of the gist of her: www.nytimes.com/2013/03/17/m...
