I guess what the show wants to do and what it ultimately communicated are different

100

Adam Reck 🔜 NYCC @adamreck.bsky.social · 9h

Still enjoyed a bunch of the show, I just think its message is super muddled

120

Adam Reck 🔜 NYCC @adamreck.bsky.social · 9h

The show wants me to believe he is defying his “programming” but he still becomes a space cop. He gets to make up his own poem, but he still does what he was trained to do, no?

000

Adam Reck 🔜 NYCC @adamreck.bsky.social · 9h

Doesn’t the fact that it DID yield the specific intended result mean their actions worked?

110

Adam Reck 🔜 NYCC @adamreck.bsky.social · 9h

Only to turn around and do the thing he was trained to do? I know folks are arguing it’s vastly different because there are flecks of yellow in the lantern, but ultimately he was trained to be a space cop and became a space cop and came home and high fived and hugged his abusers once he succeeded

100

Adam Reck 🔜 NYCC @adamreck.bsky.social · 10h

But it got him what he wanted and was celebrated at the end with handshakes and hugs

100

Adam Reck 🔜 NYCC @adamreck.bsky.social · 11h

I mean John explicitly goes home and hugs his mother, celebrating his new job. I don’t see how that doesn’t endorse what they did to him. “It worked, mom! It worked!”

I don't know know jack about Lanterns, but this show had me deeply confused.

110

Adam Reck 🔜 NYCC @adamreck.bsky.social · 11h

(This one's a spoiler, sorry) The show also explicitly suggested the way to cure a young white man's savage anger is through participation in *checks notes* college football?! What is this nonsense?

140

Adam Reck 🔜 NYCC @adamreck.bsky.social · 11h

Please confirm I'm not losing my mind here. That show did endorse child ab*se, correct? And also explicitly suggested that it's okay to endanger your kid as long as they one day get their dream job?

Hey, so that Lanterns show was really messed up, right? Like, morally? I'm not the only person who watched that and thought, THAT's what we're going with here?

Battle of the Atom has a big podcast interview with the man of mystery that is Jonathan Hickman today, and if I can give you one bit of advice, it's this: listen to the podcast, not the articles that will come from it. Context matters! Plus: Adam and Zack crush it. comicsxf.com/2026/10/05/b...

The AIPT article does shout them out but you KNOW people only read headlines. Please check out Hickman in his own words talking about original plans for Ultimate Spider-Man! Adam and Zach did such a good job interviewing him and you get a much clearer picture!
