How does an airline at the end of the world, in a country of 5.3m people, survive and even thrive? It shouldn't work. Air New Zealand's answer has been to get creative: a bed in economy, and soon bunk beds on its 787s. But it's a much harder business than it looks.
Map of the Pacific showing Air New Zealand's 12 long-haul nonstop routes from Auckland, curving out to Bali, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Shanghai, Tokyo, Honolulu, Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, and New York. Even the closest, Bali, is about 6,700 km from Auckland.

For fun, I charted the longest routes from each state. The longest is New York to Singapore, 9,536 miles. The shortest is West Virginia to St. Pete, 797 miles. For 19 states and DC, the longest route is domestic.
Geographic tile board of all 50 U.S. states and DC. Every tile gives state code, longest destination city, and miles. Tiles use Asia/Pacific, Middle East/Africa, Europe/Atlantic, and U.S./Caribbean colors. Includes seasonal and announced routes from September 25, 2026.

How do you thrive next to a much bigger neighbor? Qatar's answer: win on product. I think it might have the best in the world. Emirates made $5.7B last year to Qatar's $1.9B. But Skytrax ranked Qatar 2nd this year, 4 spots ahead of Emirates, and gave it best business class for the 13th time.
Full-width world map of Qatar Airways' 163 published summer 2026 destinations from Doha. Each route is colored by when Qatar first flew to the city: by 2009 (76), 2010 to 2014 (43), 2015 to 2016 (14), 2017 to 2019 (10), and 2020 to 2026 (20). Dubai, Emirates' hub, is marked in red just east of Doha. Airport codes label destinations across every region. Some published services may include intermediate stops; the table was checked 6 September 2026.

My favorite ideas from today's Southwest discussion: AUS: Gatwick, Honolulu, Tokyo, Rome, and Dublin STL: Honolulu PHX: Tokyo or Taipei BWI: Dublin or Keflavík on a 737-8 Longer shots: OAK, MCI, SJC, CMH, and SMF. But fun to think about.
One continuous world map of audience suggestions selected by Adam for possible Southwest routes. Austin routes are bright blue: Gatwick, Honolulu, Tokyo Narita, Rome Fiumicino, and Dublin. St. Louis to Honolulu is red. Phoenix to Tokyo Narita or Taipei are purple alternatives. Baltimore/Washington to Dublin and Keflavík are amber, reflecting the 737-8 ideas in the accompanying post. Thin, pale lines colored by origin retain 24 earlier hypothetical ideas; BWI–Dublin is drawn once in amber. Airport codes appear in boxes beside true airport nodes. These are ideas, not announced routes.

Southwest is leaning toward the 787 for its first widebody, Reuters reported yesterday. The problem is Boeing says the 787 is sold out through the end of the decade. So where do Southwest's first ones come from? I think Norse Atlantic.
Map of predicted Southwest 787 routes, none announced, colored by Southwest base, with an inset mockup of a Southwest 787. Thick lines are best guesses: Denver, Dallas, Chicago Midway, and Las Vegas to Honolulu; Orlando to London Gatwick and Manchester; Las Vegas and Denver to London Gatwick; Baltimore to London Gatwick, Paris, Dublin, and Rome. Thin lines are long shots: Baltimore to Barcelona, Orlando to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and Las Vegas to Seoul and Tokyo Narita.

The biggest story in travel no one is talking about: summer is getting longer. Delta added 2 Europe routes, but also pulled 6 more into early spring. United added 60 days to Newark to Marrakech. I wrote about it here: x.com/adampnathan...
January to June timeline of six Delta Europe routes and United's Newark to Marrakech route. Darker bars show the previous season and lighter bars the added days. Delta Minneapolis and Detroit to Rome now start in early March instead of May, Seattle to Rome in April, JFK to Porto in March, and Boston and Seattle to Barcelona in April. United Newark to Marrakech now runs to late May instead of late March. Season ends are not compared.

Rome is one of the world's great cities. San Francisco is home. I'd still put both on my list of the world's worst hotel cities. Rome will charge you a fortune for a small, awkward room. SF has endless corporate hotels and a surprisingly thin luxury bench.
Photo collage titled 'The world's worst hotel cities,' framed as Adam's personal list. Rome: Small rooms. Big prices. San Francisco: Thin luxury bench. Boston: Choices narrow fast. Seattle: Business hotels dominate. Sydney: Predictable harbor towers. Berlin: Few luxury standouts. Amsterdam: Thin bench, high rates. City photos show the Colosseum, San Francisco skyline, Boston waterfront, Seattle skyline, Sydney Opera House, Brandenburg Gate, and Amsterdam canal houses.

Charlotte Douglas had more takeoffs and landings last year than Shanghai or Istanbul, and American is now building its biggest Admirals Club ever there. How did Charlotte become American's #2 hub? It survived three airline mergers by being one of America's cheapest big airports.
Headline: CLT: Busier than Shanghai but also smaller than Las Vegas. Left: American's renderings of its new Admirals Club in Charlotte (40,000+ sq ft, its largest) and its first Charlotte Flagship lounge. Right: the 10 busiest airports by takeoffs and landings in 2025 with world ranks. American bumped more passengers last year than every other U.S. airline combined. Now it's stopped: gate agents can't close the door until enough people volunteer. It also added coach food preorders and cash and miles bookings. American is actually becoming customer friendly.
Table: American's three customer fixes this fall, each with a photo. 1. No more involuntary bumping, since Sept 30 (photo of a gate agent): the gate can't close the door on an oversold flight until enough people volunteer. In 2025 American bumped 14,758 passengers versus 9,838 at other U.S. airlines, 60% of the total. 2. Preorder food in coach, from Oct 13 (photo of American's coach snacks): reserve 7 days to 20 hours before you fly; DFW to LAX first, eligible domestic flights by the end of March. 3. Pay with cash and miles, rolling out now (screenshot of the miles slider): domestic flights excluding Alaska and Hawaii, on aa.com and the app.

Starting November 19, you can take a helicopter from Manhattan's West Side, land next to a 16-seat jet at Westchester, and be in Palm Beach or Miami about three hours later. Blade is bringing BLADEone back for wealthy New Yorkers this winter. So where else could Blade take them?
U.S. overview of 20 Westchester routes explored in the thread. Planned Blade routes to Miami OPF and Palm Beach DJT appear first in the key, followed by 17 possible additions. Aspen ASE is separately Aero listed. New candidates include Montrose MTJ, Hilton Head HHH, North Eleuthera ELH, and Providenciales PLS.

Airbnb had a real shot at becoming the travel platform for millennials. Instead, it's untrustworthy, often subpar housing inventory. Kind of a crazy self-own. And the stock shows it: down 6% in five years while the S&P 500 is up 90%.
Line chart: Airbnb stock is down 6% in five years. The S&P 500 is up 90%. What $100 invested on Oct 4, 2021 is worth on Oct 6, 2026: $94 in Airbnb versus $190 in the S&P 500 (SPY, including dividends). Airbnb fell to about $50 in late 2022 and has mostly stayed below $100 since. Data: Yahoo Finance weekly closes.

British Airways is cutting the A380's upper deck from 212 seats to 106, and every one of them will be business class. That's the largest business cabin in the sky. Emirates fits 76 business seats upstairs on its A380. It's a big premium bet on a plane many people expected BA to retire in 2020.
BA adds 36 premium seats, cuts 88 in economy. British Airways A380, today versus after the retrofit; 469 seats become 417. Left: BA renderings of the new all-business upper deck, a row of Club Suites, and the new First suite. Right: seats by deck. After the retrofit the upper deck is all Club, 106 seats, and the main deck has 12 First, 84 premium economy, and 215 economy (311 seats).

Delta's Wi-Fi went mega viral last week. Elon Musk said Ed Bastian would lose his job over it. DHH, a Delta Diamond, said Starlink was the one thing that could make him switch. And United offered Delta elites a status match: "Don't keep buffering: switch to United."

Earlier this month, Colorado cleared a six-mile I-270 expansion for construction. In August, Tennessee approved a partner for a $9.2B, 26-mile I-24 project. Both promise traffic relief. But wider roads attract more driving. That feedback loop has a name: induced demand.

I work out every day, and I wish more airports had gyms and showers. Give me 30–60 minutes to work out, a shower, and a place to change. I'd much rather board a plane feeling refreshed than spend that time eating and drinking at the gate.

One of the insane things about flying in 2026: Two people can take the same flight, depart and arrive together, and have completely different experiences from door to door. They might barely share any space beyond the plane. Here’s economy vs. Delta One from LAX to JFK.

WestJet is dropping three Europe routes after one summer: Halifax–Copenhagen, Halifax–Madrid, and Toronto–Glasgow. I've always thought of WestJet as the little low-cost carrier that could. Against a smart, powerful Air Canada, it found an overseas niche in unlikely places.
Zoomed rectangular Plate Carrée map of 28 WestJet summer 2026 Europe and Asia routes from six Canadian cities. Asia and Europe are both visible. Calgary routes are blue and other gateways teal. Halifax–Copenhagen, Halifax–Madrid and Toronto–Glasgow are red because they are absent from the reported summer 2027 schedule. The separately announced Calgary–São Paulo route is orange and ends at its mapped GRU airport point. Airport codes identify the route endpoints.

Airline premiumization is increasingly paying to remove friction. United is bringing a Base fare to First Class. The seat stays up front; some of the benefits now require paying up.
Two upward waterfalls. An illustrative $350 domestic round-trip fare reaches a $610 midpoint after estimated seat, bag, boarding and fare-upgrade costs. These are illustrative midpoints, not a sampled average. A separate official Delta example rises from $2,689 for Basic Business to $2,889 for Classic; both include the lie-flat seat and meal, while Classic restores more bags, mileage, flexibility and ground benefits after the 2027 transition.

Alaska says it will start with 25 lie-flat 737-10s. So where might they go? I looked at a full year of DOT fare and traffic data across seven Alaska gateways, then mapped 39 route possibilities.

Starlink is the best thing to come to planes since Biscoff cookies, and the rollout is accelerating. It’s already live on 22 passenger airline brands. Another 24 have announced it. I mapped every airline rolling it out:

Qantas says Sydney-New York will finally start in mid-2028. Sydney-London is due in October 2027. If they launch, they'll be the world's second-longest and longest scheduled flights. Qantas first proposed this in 2017. Then came research flights, COVID and aircraft delays.
Borderless Australia-centered rectangular world map with white oceans and gradient continents. The current 20 longest scheduled passenger nonstop airport pairs use bright, distinct operating-airline colors. Shared routes use two colors. Large airport-code tags label every endpoint, with white exclusion halos preventing through-routes from appearing to stop at unrelated airports. Qantas's planned Sydney-New York and Sydney-London routes use the same heavier pink treatment so they are distinct from current Qantas routes. Royal Caribbean just agreed to spend $3 billion so it can sell you the same vacation on land or at sea. It is buying half of Sandals and Beaches. My bigger takeaway: cruises are basically all-inclusive resorts that move. Royal can now sell both.
