I had to do this timed task today and the guy running the test said the best time was 2:40. Obviously I took that as a challenge but the guy wandered off, and when he saw I had finished he said I did it in 2:42. It was definitely 2:30, at most! Give me my meaningless record!

The burgess assizes have a big list of products that passed through the market, and the taxes paid on all of them. I can translate almost everything except "ecuelles de marbre peintes et debornies", which are marble bowls that are painted and...something?

In Greek "martyr" means a witness, but in Christian use it came to mean someone tortured/killed for their faith, and that meaning was adopted in Latin and its descendants. In Old French "martire" evolved to mean the torture itself, which is how it's used in the Burgess Assizes of Jerusalem.

Our TV/Internet bill went way up, so I called them and said "nah" and they dropped it back down to the previous price, which is still way too much, really. Presumably the prices are completely made up and they just count on most people not bothering to notice or complain

I made some chocolate zucchini bread but I forgot to take a picture of it before cutting it up. Is it even real if I don't post it on social media?!

Found this in the library at the University of Western Ontario: "The Eastern Mediterranean Lands in the Period of the Crusades", gifted by Peter Edbury to John Rowe, who taught at UWO at the time. Rowe retired long before I was a student there, so unfortunately I never got to meet him
The cover of The Eastern Mediterranean Lands in the Period of the Crusades, edited by P.M. HoltInside the book it says "To John Rowe, with best wishes, Peter W. Edbury, April 1970."

Maybe just an Ontario-specific problem, but we buy milk in 4 litre bags that are divided into three smaller bags. But the last one I bought turned out to have two normal sized bags and this one half-size bag?! I've never seen anything like it before

Philip of Novara: hey I wrote this song, want to hear it John of Beirut: please Philip, no Philip of Novara: ok how about this Renard the Fox fanfic I wrote about you John of Beirut: *deep sigh*
A snippet from "The Wars of Frederick II Against the Ibelins in Syria and Cyprus" by Philip of Novara, translated by John L. La Monte. In the text, Philip of Novara wants to sing a song about a peace treaty but his lord John of Beirut does not want him to. Instead, Philip tells the story of Renard the Fox, with the characters replaced by the real people involved in the treaty.

Sometimes there are Theatre Kids (complimentary) and sometimes there are Theatre Kids (derogatory) and I'm pretty sure the problem with Strange New Worlds is that it's too much of the latter

Yesterday there was a dead squirrel in front of my house, which must have been hit by a car the night before, and was gradually disintegrated by more cars/trucks/buses. Last night there was a skunky smell outside, and now there's a dead skunk beside the dead squirrel

My 9/11 story is that I didn't have class until 1 pm on Tuesdays, so I slept in until noon and missed everything. Then they didn't even cancel classes and I had one from 7-10 that night

The university is about 4 km away by road, but in the general topography of the city it's in the river valley and we're on a hill further upstream, so the orientation week concerts sound like they're right outside my house

This story is of course more complicated, but the gist is that a kid was bullying my daughter, and that kid eventually ended up bullying the entire grade, so all the kids gathered together and confronted her. This is a level of maturity and organization that I certainly did not possess at that age

World Map Discourse was making absolutely no sense to me, but then I realized normal people have never thought about cartography and map projections, and they think of the Mercator map they had in their elementary school classroom as "the map"

In France I used to watch a lot of English movies dubbed into French. Of course, I soon learned that French people looked down on dubbed movies and preferred to watch the original versions, since that helped them learn English. Nevertheless! Here are some observations about French dubs

I guess this stuff is some kind of fancy underwear, but that's not important. The important thing is the lesson in Canadian dialectology! Without actually looking it up, I will guess that the Manmade guys are Anglophones from Montreal, although at least one of them is probably a native Francophone

My "crusades, Byzantine, other medieval, and any other stuff that is interesting to me, personally" bibliography that I've been making to over the years was originally separated into books and articles, but that doesn't make much sense. I need to organize all this better

I've mostly avoided allergies this year...except after sticking my head in the tomato plants, that was a poor choice. We have dozens of tomatoes and thousands of cherry tomatoes this time, somehow. They're everywhere, they even took over the zucchini and the peppers

We should actually expand the Great Lakes. Nipigon, Nippissing, Champlain, St. Clair, Simcoe...make Georgian Bay a separate lake. Even add Lake Scugog

Peter Cullen died too??? I remember when I was a little kid and they stopped showing Transformers on TV and replaced it with BraveStarr, I was so mad. BraveStarr sucks! When I was an adult and watched the Transformers movie in the theatre, I recognized Peter Cullen's voice and I was so happy

10 years ago today, I got my thyroid removed, which should have been a pretty minor operation, but they also had to take out a big cancerous lump that was trying to escape through my neck, and some other cells in my chest. So now I have a huge scar that can be only be described as "bitchin"
