For all the wonder of statues, mosaics, ceramics & ruined temples, I find few Roman remains more evocative than the roads with their worn paving, rut-marks and an immediately imaginable sense of prosaic life going on with people, carts & animals in the streets. This one is at Morgantina, Sicily. 🏺
A Roman road stretching to the horizon up a gentle slope. The stones are old and lichen covered, there are kerbs to the left and right. Wild plants grow low among some of the stones. Photo: mine, April 2026.

AE George Russell thought the post-impressionists at the 1911 United Arts Club exhibition in Dublin: "were not decadent but merely decrepit". According to Joseph Plunkett, Cezanne was "poor", Matisse "hopeless", Picasso an "idiot" & Van Gogh "ought to be shot".

Long, long before colonists settled Deer Isle & established a ferry landing in 1792, Wabanaki people were here. The Scott's Landing shell mound is evidence of at least 3,000 years of use of this site. Like many Maine shell middens the site is at risk from sea level rise & erosion. #climateheritage 🏺

This one's not going off to the library but I came across it again while clearing stuff out. Sir Henry Irving had an excellent bookplate - as did Sir John Martin Harvey who might have acquired this copy of the Life of Betterton directly from him. An earlier owner was Charles Blunt(?). #bookloversday

I feel like the person who painted this duck decoy we just picked up in the Adirondacks was trying to go for a surf scoter, white-winged scoter, goldeneye hybrid vibe? Was it common to combine multiple species’ characteristics in one decoy? Or maybe it’s not the original body? 🪶
