Given recent AI progress and the fear it has put in SaaS, this comes to mind again:
Kit Dotcom tweet from 2013:

"How to stop piracy: 1 Create great stuff 2 Make it easy to buy 3 Same day worldwide release 4 Fair price 5 Works on any device"

An annoying one-by-error: Rushing into the hospital. Car park system wouldn't let me in until a car left because it was full, but it was off by one, so I had to wait inside until another left. At the same time, the next car is coming and you're hoping they don't try to take it
Video from inside car, waiting inside car park. You can see another car waiting at the entrance to be let in

It just occurred to me that Cameo is like AI video generation via prompts, but instead of selecting a model, you select a celebrity / real-life model

142HP?! What a rocket. I might have to get one to spray out my window when overtaking. No wonder it's so expensive

Desktop app I'm too busy to build: AppSnitcher. It tells you whenever an app adds itself to your dock or sets itself to launch on login. It would then offer actions like "block/revert" and "block all future attempts".

I was flying it at the start, I felt amazing, and then it happened near 1k. I was too embarrassed to quit so I mostly walked the rest. The obstacles felt easy. It's annoying because I think I would've done really well

I am so unlucky haha. Back in August, I tore both sides of my groin very badly (it came off the bone on one side). I was due to go back soccer training this week. During a 7k mud run / obstacle course at the weekend, I fractured my ankle and tore ligaments.

My latest project at Readwise is an interesting one. I built it from end-to-end and I loved learning about AI, vector databases, etc. So many users have called it a 'game-changer' that we've joked about renaming it that 😅

I've always found it hard to fall asleep. Mental games / concentrating on something usually doesn't work. I've found one that has worked for me (at least twice anyway); go through the alphabet and name 3 countries that start with each letter. I think the key is in being patient and not skipping

I am rational, not impulsive. I see randomness in coincidences, not fate. I'm sceptical. But I find myself waiting for this year to end, hoping the he next will better, even though new year's day is just an arbitrary point in time. The bar is very low.

I'm sick of travelling for the first time ever. That was disappointing until I realised I had 9 flights in 13 days, two of which were 10hrs+, plus I had two ~10hr delays in airports. It's only fair that I'm tired then

It's 4am. I just got back from a stag party 12 hours ago and I'm back in the airport again. I've already accidentally left my passport at the water fountain. Off to a good start

Here's a funny little quirk in the Premier League app. The fixture difficulty table doesn't scroll horizontally as a whole, each row is independently scrollable and it's then synced to the other rows. It makes for some funny behaviour if you scroll back and forth.

Off the top of my head, I think there was an O'Reilly book and a Smashing Magazine article (years ago) that were particularly helpful for me

SSE unless you need to send anything from client to server in my opinion. There are a good few upsides like if your server restarts it won't kill all (WS) connections. If you code your clients to catch up via API calls after a disconnect, a server restart is like DDOSing yourself 😛

The stuff of nightmares: "Researchers say an AI-powered transcription tool used in hospitals invents things no one ever said" apnews.com/article/ai-a...
"But Whisper has a major flaw: It is prone to making up chunks of text or even entire sentences, according to interviews with more than a dozen software engineers, developers and academic researchers.

Those experts said some of the invented text — known in the industry as hallucinations — can include racial commentary, violent rhetoric and even imagined medical treatments.""Company officials said they are aware that Whisper can hallucinate and are addressing the problem.

It’s impossible to compare Nabla’s AI-generated transcript to the original recording because Nabla’s tool erases the original audio for “data safety reasons,” Raison said.

Nabla said the tool has been used to transcribe an estimated 7 million medical visits."

At least I've never had a release that broke someone's identity
From the r/AncestryDNA subreddit:

"Per the update, my sister's Irish dipped from 18% to 0%. Anyone else suddenly lose an ethnicity?"

Will try to make a reduced example. I assume I'm doing something silly. And I am using a polyfill which may have been a factor

Adam Lynch @adamlynch.com · 21/10/2024
Will read thanks. #2 doesn't sound right to me but I assume I'm misunderstanding it. E.g. today I had some CSS in a style tag in a custom element (shadow root mode = open) and it affected elements outside of the custom element. It was CSS from Tippy.js. I had to prefix the selectors with `:host `

Also annoying: `rem` units are *always* relative to the `html` element's `font-size`, not the custom element `:host` like you might expect
000
Adam Lynch @adamlynch.com · 21/10/2024
This is particularly annoying for browser extensions which insert custom elements into the DOM, which import styles from `node_modules`. Luckily, I found a way to prefix all selectors in the final CSS with `host: `
100
Adam Lynch @adamlynch.com · 21/10/2024
Shadow DOM protects my custom element from styles defined outside, nice! Oh... some rules can pierce the shadow DOM. Oh... and my custom element's CSS can affect elements outside of it.
