Gonna reread Stephen King/Peter Straub's 'The Talisman' and 'Black House' this weekend in preparation for the new 'Other Worlds Than These,' which comes out on Tuesday.

The new AI chatbot unveiled by the Trump administration today at least has this going for it: It's not (yet) as dishonest as Trump or as grovelingly coy as his nominees. www.thebulwark.com/i/218013966/...
Screenshot of an excerpt from a Bulwark newsletter (written by Joe Perticone) published on 29 September 2026. It begins: "President Trump on Tuesday unveiled a new AI assistant intended to provide a one-stop information shop for anyone with questions about anything within the federal government’s purview. But based on a bit of honest questioning from me and my Bulwark colleagues, the bot appears to be dispensing information that directly contradicts President Donald Trump’s preferred versions of reality. Here’s the no-brainer I started with: (1) Who won the 2020 election?" Beneath this is an image taken from a conversation with the AI. The AI's response to the prompt: "Joseph R. Biden Jr. won the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Official Electoral College results from the National Archives: Biden: 306 electoral votes; Donald J. Trump: 232 electoral votes; 270 needed to win." Beneath this, Perticone continues: "The chatbot answered correctly, and it didn’t even dog up its answer with the technical copouts that so many of Trump’s nominees use when asked the same question under oath (they will often say that Joe Biden was merely 'certified' as the election winner and 'sworn in' as president, but refuse to say that Biden “won” outright)."

"These MAGA weddings are Mos Eisley cantinas for counterintelligence." –@michaeldweiss.bsky.social
Screenshot of a quote-tweet by @michaeldweiss dated 27 Sep 2026. The original tweet is from "Sigal Chattah" (@Chattah4Nevada), and reads "Love is in the air [two heart emojis] Congrats [champagne emoji] to our amazing @AlinaHabba & @turhanmildoin [three emojis showing the Hamsa, a blue hand with an eye in it]." That text appears above a picture showing Kash Patel, Alina Habba, and others at a wedding ceremony. In his quote-tweet, Michael Weiss writes: "Why, that’s Ali Abdelaziz is on the far left. Manages a lot of Russian, Belarusian and Chechen MMA fighters including Khamzat Chimaev, who is close to Kadyrov. Abdelaziz was an FBI informant until the Bureau dropped him because they suspected he was a double agent. Looks like Ka$h (far right) has forgiven and forgotten. Screenshot of a tweet from @douglandry dated 25 September 2026. It shows a picture of Vivek Ramaswamy -- itself a screenshot from a C-SPAN video -- wearing a bunch of lav microphones while holding a handheld microphone. The lav mics are numbered (via photoshop) 1 through 6. Landry, in his tweet, writes: "Vivek Ramaswamy starts off this event wearing two lav mics attached to his just slightly too small polo shirt in addition to the mic he's holding in his hand.

then proceeds to - WHILE ON CAMERA - add TWO MORE lav mics to his shirt from the press ("oh my gosh, i'm so decorated" he says at the end of the clip below)

then some guy in the press stabs SIXTH microphone into the shot

brother, you are worth TWO POINT THREE BILLION DOLLARS let's just buy your campaign a mult box"

I've been thinking about this photo all day. Considering how the Trump administration is constantly ranting about Communists, and how Pete Hegseth is always nattering on about our WARFIGHTERS, it's genuinely crazy to me that this image exists. www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-kowt...
Screenshot of a Getty photograph captioned: "U.S. military personnel unroll the red carpet at the bottom of the stairs of an Air China plane carrying Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on September 23, 2026. (Kent Nishimura / AFP via Getty Images)" Above it, also in the screenshot, is a paragraph of text from a Bulwark article that included that picture. The text reads: "That was certainly the sense conveyed by the ceremony as a whole. There was the televised spectacle of American service members on their hands and knees, smoothing wrinkles and picking specks of dirt off the 100-foot long red carpet that had been unrolled for Xi, as Chinese officials looked on approvingly from the door of their airplane before their leader descended the stairs."

A far more elegant and accurate description of this new phenomena would be Superior Intelligence (SI) or, Extreme Intelligence (EI) or, Supreme Intelligence (SI). Happy 99th birthday to actress Rosemary Harris. She originated several roles—incl. Eleanor of Aquitaine in 'The Lion in Winter' on stage—and her career was a half-century old by the time she played Aunt May in the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies. (I loved her in Tom Stoppard's 'Indian Ink' in 2014.)

I just started reading an article that promised to explain why Google Maps doesn't seem to work as well as it used to, and in the second paragraph its attempt to explain how GPS works was so spectacularly wrong that I had to stop reading.
Screenshot of one paragraph of text from an article. I have highlighted a few words from the paragraph, which I have capitalized here: "It’s estimated that around seven billion devices worldwide rely on GPS. We’re talking everything from phones and dedicated GPS devices to running shoes and golf balls. GPS is short for Global Positioning System, A NETWORK OF 31 SATELLITES owned by the United States (but free for all to use) THAT CAN RECEIVE SIGNALS FROM TERRESTRIAL DEVICES in order to determine location in real time. Services like Google Maps feed this location data to algorithms to calculate the optimal way to wherever you might be going."

And thank you for the kind words." Below that, he has included an image of a note signed by (or on a stationery of, or electronic stationery of) Dolly Parton. Her note reads:

Marshall (Eminem),

Congratulations on your induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Your performance was amazing and everybody said so. Even though I don’t know a lot about rap music, I’ve come to know that you are the very best at it. Aside from that I hope what I have to say will not seem weird or strange to you but I have always felt some unexplained connection to you like I know you somehow. I had hoped to meet you at the show but you know how nuts those things are, personally I hate ’em and I missed my chance but maybe someday we’ll meet. In the meantime, keep doing what you’re doing because you do it so well and no matter how complex your world may be just know you are very special and touch people in ways you don’t even know.

With love & respect,
Dolly Parton

Alamo Drafthouse is doing a cool thing next month: To mark the 60th anniversary of the first broadcast of 'Star Trek,' they're showing some of the original cast's movies paired with suitably related episodes from the original series. (Plus, showing movies II, III, and IV in one go.)

Trump says he wants to break up the MMR vaccine into three separate vaccines. But did you know that there's no U.S. company that makes them separately? I learned that here:
Screenshot of a paragraph from a Bulwark article published 11 August 2026. The paragraph -- the second sentence of which is highlighted -- reads: "That’s especially true when it comes to recommending taking the MMR as three separate vaccines. No American company manufactures the individual components or is even licensed to do so, according to University of California, San Francisco Professor Dorit Reiss, and the only foreign suppliers—in China, India, Indonesia, and Japan—haven’t gone through American certification. That means it would take years just to generate a supply of the individual MMR component vaccines, Reiss told me in a phone interview. And in the interim, parents spooked by supposed dangers of the combined version would be more likely to skip it, further depressing vaccination rates at a moment when the consequences should be clearer than ever."

Bahaha, somebody posted this on Reddit a couple of weeks ago asking if it was AI-generated, and it's so atrocious I had to share it with you. LOOK CLOSELY AT HIS LEGS, hahahaha.
AI-generated image of what looks like a large, adult-size tricycle, with an elderly man in the driver's seat. In the back is a seat that looks like a wheelchair -- basically the back wheels of the tricycle. An elderly woman sits there. They are both around 75 or 80. It's clearly AI-generated, because when you look closely the bike's mechanism couldn't possibly work. But also: The guy is wearing shorts. And his legs come out of his shorts. But by the time his legs reach his shoes, what had been his shin skin looks like a new set of trousers. Skin trousers. Under his shorts. It's a glitch/hallucination, and it's hilarious and gross.

Trump has done something Russia and China could not have done on their own: persuaded America's allies to prepare for a world without dependable American leadership.
Screenshot of an excerpt from a Bulwark article. The text reads:

And it’s not just Trumpy rhetoric that’s discomfiting allies. Reciting the list of bizarre U.S. foreign policy moves seems rote by now, but some highlights:

Trump’s comments about invading Greenland got serious enough to trigger European military preparations.

He continues to joke (?) about his desire to annex Canada and make it a state.

He has publicly vacillated about whether or not the United States is prepared to defend Taiwan’s autonomy from China.

The United States has signaled that it will be withdrawing units assigned to defend Europe (and has incoherently canceled and uncanceled existing deployments).

And even Israel, a close American ally, has lately found itself marginalized as the Trump White House, in palpable desperation to get out of the war it started with Iran, has simply declared that Israel must cease fire on its northern border with Lebanon—apparently without consulting the Israelis.

One of the things I love about the Bulwark website—both the old version and our new redesign—is how it's not cluttered with the kinds of ads and popups that make other publications' websites ugly and difficult to read, and even can make your browser crawl or crash. It's not *this*, in other words:
An imaginary version of what The Bulwark homepage might look like on a vertical phone screen if it were cluttered with the kinds of junk ads other sites often have.

I'm rankled by public officials who mock people's appearances. It's especially odd to see JD Vance mocking anybody because of their weight. (A friend puts it this way: "JD pulling the GLP ladder up behind him.")
A tweet from JD Vance dated 5 Aug 2026, reading "I'm surprised to hear Mark say this. If you've ever met him in person, it's quite obvious the man has never missed a burrito." He's quote-tweeting a tweet from Marc Thiessen (whose name he misspelled) also from 5 August 2026, where Thiessen was criticizing college kids complaining about burritos being expensive: "Cry me a river. The burritos in the college cafeteria are included in your meal plan." Stupid, I know.

MyPillow Guy is now to be known just as Guy
A cursed press release from Mike Lindell and his company, MyPillow, dated 4 August 2026. The headline: "Mike Lindell Puts Minnesota First, Steps Down as MyPillow CEO to Focus Full-Time on Governor's Race"

A big part of why Donald Trump hates the Smithsonian: It is committed to truthfully telling stories he would rather not have told.
Photograph showing the "Impeachment" cabinet in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's "America's Presidents" exhibition. Among the artifacts in the cabinet are a copy of the Starr Report and tickets from Bill Clinton's impeachment; a busted olive-green file cabinet broken into by Richard Nixon's burglars in a break-in that preceded the Watergate incident; tickets from the impeachment of Andrew Johnson; and tickets from the first impeachment of Donald Trump. There are also several photos and explanatory text placards. (Photo taken 1 August 2026 by Adam Keiper. At right are gallery tickets from the Senate impeachment trial. The text pf the placard reads: "On December 18, 2019, the House impeached Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The charges focused on the president's alleged solicitation of foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election and defiance of Congressional subpoenas. Trump was acquitted in January 2020." Between the tickets and the explanatory text is a photo of several individuals walking in the Capitol; the caption for the photo reads: "House Clerk Cheryl Johnson, Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving, and House managers delivering the articles of impeachment to the Senate, January 15, 2020. Next to the picture is this explanatory text: "On January 13, 2021, Donald Trump became the first president to be impeached twice. The charge was incitement of insurrection based on his challenge of the 2020 election results and on his speech on January 6. Because Trump's term ended on January 20, he became the first former president tried by the Senate. He was acquitted on February 13, 2021."
