Just scanned the carvings on Long Meg, Cumbria. 🤔 There are five circular motifs carved on the stone... not just the three that are visible (one is a spiral!). I believe there was a previous study that suspected five, but would say there is 100%... @surveylikeagirl.bsky.social

We get a lot of stupid outside right-wing opinions about minority groups visiting the Lake District. But they aren't the ones buying up 2/3rds of the properties to convert to holiday lets, and getting the entire Romantic philosophy of the region wrong...

I know a Langdale Axe when I see one! The Irish came to northwest England (and probably East Riding / Wales) a LOT in the Neolithic. Particularly around the same time stone circles started showing up in the landscape!

Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
Very jealous! That’s a magnificent one! I bet there’s tons lost under the sprawl of Greater London. (Also, don’t let my jealous grumblings make you think I hate Stonehenge. I’m just particularly into lost sites!)
110
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
Whereas, the five cursus monuments at Rudston are completely lost. The superhenge and cursus at the Devil’s Arrows and Long Meg are lost. All earthworks at Stanton Drew are gone. And Shap Avenue was blown up to make way for a rail line. Stonehenge has relatively few losses
100
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
Re. outlier - There are few cursus monuments in Britain as well preserved as the one right next to Stonehenge. I’d reckon it, and Stonehenge, are both examples of marginal, rural landscape preservation. And it’s the only one in that western megalithic tradition.
100
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
Hm, I’m not sure. Waun Mawn was supposedly made into it. Flagstones “inspired Stonehenge”. There was buzz about the altar stone being “brought from Orkney”. This one claims a “Stonehenge prototype” Not to mention the many books that claim that it’s “the last great monument of the Neolithic”.
110
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
The comparison I often make is Liverpool Cathedral. THE biggest Cathedral in the UK - perfectly preserved. Yet, it’s not the cultural icon you might suspect based on the architecture alone.
010
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
No doubt! But I highly doubt the rare survival of that cursus at Stonehenge is a coincidence. It’s an incredibly important outlier! It’s the comparison as equals that’s lacking in my opinion. Rather, every other site falls into the narrative that Stonehenge was the pinnacle.
200
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
Basically what I meant by “Stonehenge-like” - but specifically Neolithic. Sites like Rudston, for example, actually have a larger Neolithic footprint than Stonehenge. Avebury and Shap Avenue are also far larger.
110
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
It’s still a one-of-a-kind incredibly important site today (because of the survivorship / history). But, the narrative behind it is purely for the press. And I’m very skeptical of anything that places it as THE proto-capital of Neolithic Britain.
100
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
When, realistically, Stonehenge is an incredibly well researched example of survivorship bias. There were likely dozens of Stonehenge-like sites across Britain. So the relatively small Neolithic ritual complex on Salisbury Plain is blown way out of proportion.
200
Adam M Ibbotson 🏺 @adamibbotson.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
There’s a strange idea that’s always pinned to Stonehenge, and not really anywhere else. That it was all one continuous plan, whereby sites across the country were all a warm up to it. The “last great monument of the Neolithic”, the “first Stonehenge” etc. But that’s pure fiction.

A lot frustrates me about the press release put out. Why is the date so precise? All C14 dates are a range - is 2950BCE the median, the start, or the end of the range? And the interpretation of the (very nice) discoidal knife/scraper as a symbol of the sun disc is many levels of bonkers.

Did humans observe the solstice at this site centuries before Stonehenge?
Two wooden posts sunk into a hillside three miles east of Stonehenge may have been the earliest known solar alignment on that landscape, scientists say.

Well, they do, actually. Go on Google Maps, use the measuring tool. Draw a line though the northern henges entrance, through the southern henge - then all the way to the Devil’s Arrows (arbitrary I know). This passes directly through Nunwick Henge’s causeways.
