An encouraging story of local politics: a couple weeks ago, contractors replaced the storm drains on our corner. Ours is a low-lying neighborhood, so this was a good thing. In the process, they bumped a telephone pole, leaving it to lean precariously over the street, cracked at the base. (1/n)

Last winter, I bought a pair of South African-made Jim Green boots. They're very good: comfortable, well-made, and available in wide sizes. Today they emailed about their latest offering: the Bush War Boot. There's a promotional video, too, featuring Rhodesian (white-supremacist) soldiers. Wtaf?

Hell Gate:

After the debate, reporters filed into the spin room. All the candidates took a turn answering questions—everyone but Cuomo, who sent his press rep Jon Reinish, and who took the podium and began barking at reporters about how Cuomo is a "civil rights trailblazer" because he helped pass marriage equality.

The reporters in the room wanted to know: Where the hell was Cuomo? Reinish didn't answer. Later, he kept shouting that reporters should ask about some people who apparently called Cuomo a "Zionist dog." The scene was embarrassingly close to something you'd see on "Veep."

I like Scott Stringer. I admire his willingness to say the quiet part out loud: we can’t all scarf all the bagels without packing on the pounds. And Leo’s is pretty good as business district bagels go. Too bad his campaign, like his bagel, is scooped out.

9. What’s your bagel order?

We order from Leo’s. I’m a plain bagel now, not an everything bagel. I do a vegetable smear, tomato, onion.

I like to cut in half and then I cut it in fourths because I think if I only eat a quarter of it, I’ll lose weight. That never happens. I eat the whole thing.

Toasted or not toasted?

I’m going through a bagel moment. For me now, I’m in a non-toast phase. I don’t know if I can tell this to New Yorkers, but I’m a scooped-out bagel man. Because I’m trying to look good.
