When saving is the goal, the obstacle between you and saving money is you. When it's finally time to spend money, the obstacle is still you.

Retirement is a whole new stage of life—one the path to retirement doesn't prepare us for. I'm so pleased Meera Ramen took the time explore the kind of planning available beyond traditional portfolio management. Thanks to @theglobeandmail.com for sharing. www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/pe...

Financial adviser or life coach? The growing hunger for advice on retirement’s ‘softer side’

I once spoke with a retiree with $2M in savings. When she asked her advisor, ‘How do I start drawing income in retirement?’ he replied, ‘Why would you take money out?’ He manages her investments but has no plan for her retirement income—and worse, refused to help create one.

Before retirees buy a big insurance policy, remember, if you're healthy enough to qualify for insurance, you're healthy enough to use the money instead of leaving more behind. My latest collaboration with Globe Advisor. www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/gl...

Life insurance is a useful estate planning tool, but purchasing a policy in retirement isn’t for everyone
Clients often use life insurance to help heirs cover the capital gains tax on a family cottage or other asset after their death

You reach a point in life when saving money isn't your problem, it's spending it. We simply call this stage retirement.

When @thewallstreet.bsky.social quoted me as saying, "If you die with a lot of money, it means you sacrificed too much and lived too small," commenters bashed the sentiment as reckless. They're not wrong...

Retirees end up spending less over time, because they're afraid to make inflationary adjustments to their income payments. Instead, retirees restrict their spending to the confines of the income they receive, reducing their spending in real terms over time.

When selling their business, I see the concept of a Vendor Take-Back loan, which makes many business owners stop and ask, "Why would I let them pay for my business with my money?" I get it. You own a business, and it produces x free cash flow.

Financial planners tie the HOW to your WHY. Money decisions can be mentally taxing, even when you've done the research and know your options. This is where financial planners can help in ways the internet can't. They explain why, for your situation, one option is better than the rest.

Retirement is when we expect to spend more time with family. By the time we arrive, our parents are elderly, and our kids are busy building the stage we’re trying to exit. Time never cooperates the way we believe it will.

At 26, I thought rentals were an excellent way to build wealth. I hated every minute of it. I couldn't handle how people treated my property in ways I never would. What works for some people didn't work for me. I'm happy to say I'm now a passive investor. There are far fewer headaches.

The idea that 30-50 stocks gives you enough diversification misses an important point. Returns come from a handful of stocks, and most stocks are dogs. You reduce risk by owning 30-50 stocks. But you are likely to miss the stocks that drive the whole market higher.

Did you know you can split your CPP income? But unlike other retirement income, it's not an election on your tax return—you have to apply through CPP. Both spouses need to be receiving their pensions, and the longer you've been together, the more you're able to split.

Beating an index is not the same as beating your index. If you hold 100% small-cap equities, comparing yourself to a broad market index and saying, I beat it, is not beating the index. You have to measure your performance against a comparable index.

The financial markets punish those who try to win and reward those who stop trying. The case for passive over active management is as simple as that.

Actively selecting stocks despite the evidence against it is no different than denying smoking kills people while lighting up a dart. The only difference is smoking has visible symptoms, and your underperformance goes unnoticed because you’re not comparing it to passive alternatives.

People think "getting into investing" means learning how to trade. When, in reality, it's picking an index fund and learning how to save.

Some Advice-Only planners have been banned from trading investments. Financial advice without investment management feels conflict-free, but not all are Advice-Only by choice. Just as you would any other advisor, check for complaints and sanctions with credentialing bodies.

Dividends are the training wheels of investing. When you lack confidence and the market feels scary, dividends make investing feel less risky. Once you realize you don't need dividends to grow your money, your investments will pick up speed.

How will you teach your kids the value of spending more money now? It's common to teach kids how to save, especially the ones who aren't natural savers.

The very idea of inheritance is maddening. If you want your money to impact your children, give it to them at the stage of life when it can actually change their lives. By the time most people inherit money they don't need it, and the impact of your gift is lost.
