Is AI a bubble? Is it going to change the world? Will Claude take my job? Should I invest in Nvidia? Is [insert corporate entity here] my friend? We don't claim to have all the answers. But my co-author Sumedha and I had fun mapping the questions policymakers *should* be asking in our new paper:

The UK’s AI Security Institute (AISI) is one of the most technically capable evaluation bodies in any government – but what actions can it take? In our new feature, we explain AISI’s remit, its powers and what this means for AI governance in the UK. www.adalovelaceinstitute.org/feature/aisi/
A table organised in two sections with two row headings: The first heading is ‘AISI can’ and the second heading is “AISI cannot”.

Underneath the ‘AISI can’ heading are the following points: evaluate models it is given access to against a defined set of risks; work with willing developers to fix vulnerabilities it uncovers during testing; share its findings with government to inform policy responses.

Underneath the ‘AISI cannot’ heading are the following points: compel AI companies to provide access to unreleased models for testing; require that models meet safety standards before being released to the public; monitor how models cause harm once deployed in the real world; impose fines or suspend the distribution of a model that causes harm.
