The only way telling that story works well is if the wife is the main character. Otherwise you’re falling into the dutiful military spouse cliche. Praying for her hubby to come home, or crying over him. Being a military mom of a career officer is a hell of a job under the best of circumstances.

Even a movie like American Sniper, which is fully portraying Kyle as a hero, acknowledges that his decision to keep being deployed comes at tremendous cost to himself, his wife and family.

Well he wrote Pearl Harbor, so figures.

We Were Soldiers is a strange film. Some of the most gruesome battle scenes ever jutxtaposed with corny scenes out of a hallmark movie. War is hell but Americans emerge as good Christian family men.

Yeah, while it is more nuanced especially in the humanizing treatment of the Vietnamese Colonel, the underlying politics of the film are Ramboesque “we weren’t allowed to win” lore. The higher ups are depicted as handwringing bureaucrats afraid of widening the war.

Filmed at the base Lt. Calley would be tried and convicted for My Lai a few years later.

He said he was for gay marriage when he was up for reelection. No one knew how close post recession 2012 would be. That was a gamble that payed off. 0 Republican candidates were for gay marriage including “libertarian” Ron Paul. Obama also ended DADT. The centrist position in 2008 was civil unions.

The only good use of AI for him is to organize his incomplete screenplays and drafts he will never get to at 81 years old. Although it would have been sentimental if he hired some fresh out of college intern to help him with that, and probably better for his mental health.
