When norms are sufficiently broken, with impunity, and entirely by one side, you do have to break norms in response. That doesn't mean you have to break the law. It is perfectly lawful to expand the Court. It is perfectly lawful to investigate former officials for fraud, bribery, and abusing the powers of their office. Democrats have just been afraid to push too hard on this because they did not want matters to escalate further.Matters have already escalated further. Anyone who has lived through the past 18 months and still thinks it is too dangerous to retaliate with everything we have is someone who cannot be trusted to lead us to victory. We are far, far more likely to witness the "dissolution of the republic" if a Democratic trifecta holds back than if they exercise their lawful authority to add more seats to the Supreme Court.

According to engineering estimates, it takes about 12-15kWh of electricity to refine a kg of magnesium from magnesium oxide (the ash left over from burning magnesium) 1000 kWh is a MWh 1000 MWh is a GWh 1000 GWh is a TWh Can you see where there's potential for local refining to avoid curtailment?
In May 2026, parts of Europe encountered a striking turning point. According to Epex Spot, electricity prices in France fell below zero at midday as solar output surged beyond what grids could absorb. At the same time, analysis from Bloomberg warns that as much as 40TWh of solar electricity could be curtailed this summer, enough to power a major city for a year.

No Man's Land

Freedom has no home address.
Liberty swears no fealty.
Bravery gets up, bruised,
Every morning,
Before dawn's early light,
To build a home for tomorrow
In the rubble of yesterday.

I'll give you *precisely one* guess which American writer living in Paris they're referring to.
Call it a tale of two heatwave experiences.

As brutally hot conditions brought much of western Europe to its knees, an American writer living in Paris asserted that, for many, the heat was not “nearly as apocalyptic” as most media were suggesting. He said he had yet to buy a fan, instead relying on closed shutters, misting sessions and open windows in the evening to keep his ground-level flat cool.

Less than 20km away, in a southern suburb of Paris, Aboubakar, 60, wept as he explained that temperatures had climbed as high as 40C inside his fourth-floor flat. “I’m suffocating,” he told the Guardian. “I can’t afford to buy a fan. There are no shutters on my flat. At night I can’t sleep, it’s like a furnace.”

Inject into pourous rock in an oil producer-heavy region you say? 🚩🚩🚩
Deep Sky is proposing a 145-acre facility in the agriculture and oil-dominant southwestern region that will scrub 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere each year and inject it into porous rock formations 1,000 metres below ground. The company says it will use technology first tested at its existing accelerator in Innisfail, Alta., and will finance the $200-million Manitoba project by selling carbon credits.

This exceprt from this article in ESS News ( www.ess-news.com/2026/05/28/f... ) really drives home the new energy paradigm we're on the cusp of. The amount of excess solar production in productive times is massive, even in "non-ideal" locations like Germany.
What had previously appeared as recurring midday volatility evolved into a much broader structural pattern: prolonged periods of renewable oversupply, increasingly persistent negative prices, and a growing decoupling between fossil fuel costs and wholesale electricity prices.
Despite geopolitical tensions and elevated gas prices linked to developments in the Middle East, Germany’s electricity market increasingly moved according to a different logic: solar-driven oversupply. Strong photovoltaic generation, combined with moderate spring demand and rising wind output, created a market environment defined less by scarcity and more by excess generation during large parts of the day.

This has been a bit of a whirlwind tour of the concept. I'm hoping to find time to make a more polished way for folks to engage with it, as well as dive into the finer details. I genuinely think there's a place for a fuel like magnesium in our energy future. /🧵

We are heading into an energy world where massive deployments of solar.and wind means there are going to be times of ludicrous abundance. Literally more energy than we know what to do with. Magnesium provides a way to harvest and store that abundance for the lean times.

Fun fact: you could (theoretically) cleanly synthesize ammonium nitrate, a widely used nitrogen fertilizer, using magnesium combustion. Because burning magnesium in water vapor yields hydrogen, you could skip the dirtiest step of the Haber Bosch/Ostwald process (getting the hydrogen).
