A big reason why I rate 'Unkown' above 'Grapes' as a novel is that Babb writes from within the communities she describes, while Steinbeck writes as an outside observer.

It's #WaymarkWednesday so here's a lesser-known trail in Gloucestershire, the Isbourne Way.

A slate-blue waymark roundel nailed to a wooden post. At the centre a white waymark arrow bearing a black 8-spoked wheel. White lettering around the circumference reads "ISBOURNE WAY" and "Devised and promoted by Winchcombe Walkers are Welcombe".

OK, I'm not very good at colours so you may not agree it's slate-blue.

We would work out the route before the journey using a map or a book of maps called a road atlas. We would scribble sufficient directions (e.g. "L on A451 after Felpersham") on a scrap of paper which we would keep handy, often by sellotaping it to the dashboard.

Granddaughter (11) has just started secondary school. One of the lessons is Engineering. They are split into teams and have a project to build an extraterrestrial rover vehicle. First task was to give theirs a name. G/d proposed 'Arcturus' but the others objected because they couldn't pronounce it.
