"Hard to pretend when there's no energy to keep up the act." He lowered the bottle again, dark sunken eyes flitting towards her. "At least with this," The soldier gestured towards the alcohol, "I can at least find a way to feel something that isn't just heavy."

"Unfortunately, my life is a depressing one. If I don't have to think about anything, I'll be fine." Lifting the bottle back up to take another sip from it. "If the cigarettes don't kill me, maybe this will. Eventually."

He glances over at them, brow raised as he pauses, lowering the bottle. "Can't a fella drink to forget?"

"He wouldn't recognize me, hell, he barely recognized me when I last saw him." He tightened his grip onto the bottle, the ODST's dark eyes lifting up to meet with the old man's gaze. "He'd probably see me as some poor bastard who's down on his luck. He . . . Wasn't all there in the end. —

"My father. He was all that I had left after the glassing of our homeworld. We made it out, just barely. He went back into the forces to fight, I joined not long after. Didn't see him for a while after that." The ODST brings the bottle back up towards his lips,—

"I don't want to be defined by the things that have beaten me down into the dirt. It's no wonder he ended up . . . going the path he did." A weak laugh escaped as he forced a smile that threatened to falter. "I know life isn't fair, but Christ, there's got to be something better than this."

"There's a lot I would rather forget. Things I've seen, things I've had to do, things I've said. Often times I swear I'm God's favorite fool." He swirls the liquid around in the bottle somewhat, glancing down at it and then back over at him. "It's been one thing after another for a while."

"I feel like you'd like limoncello. I'll have to make a new batch of it soon." The ODST takes another swig of the alcohol before offering it back over to her. "I like making it now and then. It's supposed to be sipped, but that doesn't stop me."

010

ꜱɢᴛ. ʀᴀᴍᴏɴ "ꜱᴍᴏᴋᴇʏ" ᴠᴇʀᴀ @acridcynic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

"Fair enough. Figured I'd ask, I know some people have specific tastes." He moved the carton and lighter back into his pockets and reached for the bottle, taking a swig from it himself. "If it's strong enough to mess me up, I'll drink it. Or if it's sour. Anything lemon or lime is good."

ꜱɢᴛ. ʀᴀᴍᴏɴ "ꜱᴍᴏᴋᴇʏ" ᴠᴇʀᴀ @acridcynic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

He glanced over in her direction, his tired gaze falling on her. "Its not a bad brand. It's supposed to be a decent one." He shoved both hands into his pockets and pulled out a lighter and a small carton. "Got a favorite of the poisons?"

He drinks to escape from himself. From the guilt and the shame that seems to plague him, no matter what he tries to do. . . . It's not the best of habits, but it could always be much worse. Just as long as he can forget the pain, that's all that matters. . . . He offers the bottle of tequila.

ꜱɢᴛ. ʀᴀᴍᴏɴ "ꜱᴍᴏᴋᴇʏ" ᴠᴇʀᴀ @acridcynic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

"I see. Well . . . What is your ship supposed to look like?" Timelords, huh? It sounded like something he'd read out of a science fiction novel, but who was he to argue? After all, this old man DID materialize before him out of nowhere. "Is it having issues with functioning?"

"Well . . . If you were Covenant or Banished, I'd have shot you on sight." At least as far as he was able to tell, this guy was human enough looking to not be considered a threat. He didn't even appear to be armed either. "I don't shoot unarmed men. Can you provide a form of identification, sir?"

ꜱɢᴛ. ʀᴀᴍᴏɴ "ꜱᴍᴏᴋᴇʏ" ᴠᴇʀᴀ @acridcynic.bsky.social · 14/06/2026

This was particularly bizarre. The ODST watched in awe, briefly looking away to try and locate the sound that seemed to have no origin to him. "26th century. As for the ship we're on, we're on the UNSC Infinity, sir. As far as I know, she's a one of a kind vessel."
