An ACORN member fled home after their landlord's behaviour left them feeling threatened & unsafe. Further harassment led us to march on the estate agencies he uses; which secured a face-to-face meeting to hear & make good on our member's demands. Direct action gets the goods ✊

Cardiff Council are trying to kick 17 families out of their homes for alleged links to the 2023 riots. This is disgraceful behaviour from the council. They have no desire to help those in need and instead look to punish those who were expressing anger over a devastating event in their community.
Headline from the Guardian:
Cardiff council warns tenants of eviction if household member convicted for Ely riots
If individuals are convicted and sentenced, council may go to court to seek repossession of their home, letters said.

🚨Petition: Boot Bully Bailiffs out of Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 The Welsh Gov wants to know what you 🫵 think of the Council Tax System — we say it robs working families, and benefits bully bailiffs who profit off people's misery! Want change? Sign ACORN’s petition by 23rd July: acornuk.good.do/cymru/wales-...
ACORN
Cardiff/Caerdydd
Tell the Welsh Government to Boot Bully Bailiffs!
Take action!
Deadline: 23rd July 2025Text reads:
The Welsh government is running a consultation on the administration and enforcement of council tax in the country. This is an opportunity for us to shape the direction of council tax collection. This includes the use of bailiffs, a long time enemy of ACORN members everywhere!
The situation is a dire one - in the last year, 1.2 million more people have fallen into council tax arrears. Across the UK, the total arrears was £7.5 billion in 2024. Households on the lowest incomes spend more than three times as much of their income on Council Tax as the richest. Tens of thousands of families are struggling to keep up with extortionate council tax rates, and bailiff companies are making millions from robbing them. We aren't going to put up with these lowlife scum thinking they can rip us off.

OPEN CONSULTATION
Improving the administration and enforcement of Council Tax in Wales

Yet another productive members meeting! We had thoughtful discussions about challenges faced by residents in different neighbourhoods of Cardiff and made plans for outreach activities this summer. We also had a lovely recap of all the wins we’ve achieved over the past 5 months!

🚨 With Awaab’s Law coming into effect and the Renters' Rights Bill due to become law later this year, this is a crucial time to make sure renters’ voices are heard.  That’s why we’ve just launched our yearly Renters Survey!

Kicking off the week with an ACORN victory: Over £100 of fees waived for Ashley and Kate Our members Ashley and Kate were living with serious disrepairs in their flat. The Rent Guru, their letting agency, was not only unprofessional in arranging repairs but they also demanded maintenance fees.

Should renters get compensation from their landlord when they're evicted?
The Welsh government has rejected a proposal for renters to receive two months of rent in compensation when they are evicted.
