This weekend I was in Kelowna BC and somehow ended up in South Pandosy. This neighborhood looks so good that it reminded me of some neighborhoods in Stockholm and Malmo. I hope this catches on in Canada. Somehow I forgot to take a picture 😅

As @acoyne.bsky.social writes in The Globe and Mail, minority governments often deliver more legitimate, negotiated outcomes. So why do we keep producing false majority governments with less than 40% of the vote? Proportional representation would make cooperation the norm.
Screenshot of a The Globe and Mail opinion article by Andrew Coyne titled “A minority government is best suited to manage Canada in a crisis.” Below the headline is a photo of politicians in the House of Commons, with one speaking and another seated behind him. The visible text argues that majority governments often do not represent a true majority of voters, noting recent governments formed with less than 40% support. It states that minority governments have produced important policy achievements because legislation must be negotiated rather than imposed, leading to more durable, broadly supported outcomes.

The city of Kitchener did an amazing job cleaning up the bike lanes today after getting about 10cm of snow last night. I was ready for a treacherous ride, but I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't have to dismount once :)

Canada keeps getting budgets shaped by governments that win less than half the vote. When whole regions are shut out, national priorities get skewed. Proportional representation means every region and every voter would help drive the budget, not only areas with a government MP.
A graphic with a photo of the House of Commons at the top. In the photo, three government MPs in suits stand at their desks clapping while other MPs sit or stand behind them. The green benches and wood interior of the chamber are visible. Below the photo, bold red text asks whether the federal budget reflects the interests of Canadians. Further text explains that first past the post concentrates power in a few regions and that proportional representation would create governments supported by a majority of voters and MPs from every region.

I updated the blog post with a picture I took yesterday. Notice how bike rack design matters cyclewr.ca/2025/07/08/g...
A sun-drenched parking lot at either dawn or dusk, with a long metal bike rack in the foreground. The section of the rack featuring an inverted-U design is crowded with numerous bicycles, while the simpler wave-style section to the right has only three bikes. Parked cars and a modern building are visible in the background against a clear sky.

Join a fun-filled evening as we take over the streets of downtown Kitchener with colour, community, and celebration! This casual ride will start at Kitchener Market on Wed, Jun 11th 🕐 7:00pm- 8:30pm. Hosted by the City of Kitchener and Spectrum and Camino Well-Being.
Four people on a paved road, standing or sitting with bicycles, holding or displaying Pride flags. The person on the left is standing beside a black road bike, wearing a black t-shirt with a rainbow flag design, black shorts, and rainbow-striped socks. The person in the center front is sitting in a three-wheeled adaptive bicycle with a rainbow flag design on the front panel, wearing a black t-shirt and glasses. Behind them, another person stands beside a bicycle, wearing a white t-shirt that says "love is love". On the right, a person stands wearing a red shirt, teal shorts, rainbow-striped socks, and holding a small Pride flag. Two more bicycles are parked in the background on the right. The sun shines brightly on the trees and foliage in the background. In the bottom right corner is a logo for "SPECTRUM Waterloo Region's Rainbow Community Space".

On my recent trip to Scandinavia I tried to use everything but a car. I got to be on intercity trains, metros, buses, trams, ferries, a bike, an e-bike and a kayak. I also walked many tens of kilometers. I had to take one cab to the airport, because transit didn't run at 4am 🥲 But it was electric.

Absolutely bananas! The City of Ottawa's draft zoning bylaw has height limits that are lower inside the City's greenbelt than outside. In other words, the neighbourhoods where density would be the most helpful have the most restrictions. Read here: ottawacitizen.com/op...

Burggraaf: Building heights should be uniform for new housing across the city
The proposed zoning bylaw has 2 sets of rules: one for inside the greenbelt, one for outside. Ottawa won't reach its housing goals that way.
