The main problem with Automatic License Plate Readers is that they are not being used only to search for suspects, but also to keep records on the whereabouts of everyone. They are increasingly becoming a tool for mass location tracking and surveillance.

Julio Sosa-Celis was shot by ICE agent Christian Castro during Operation Metro Surge. Federal officials claimed that the agent was acting defensively after being attacked, however, criminal charges filed against the agent stated that Castro shot through the closed front door of the Sosa-Celis home.

The city of Bloomington has settled a lawsuit brought by the ACLU-MN and our partners on behalf of Kylese Perryman. In 2021, Bloomington police arrested Perryman without probable cause. In the settlement, Bloomington agreed to implement policy and training changes within its police department.

This week, the Detroit Lakes School Board passed a resolution on a 4-2 vote to remove all Pride-related items from district schools. In response, the ACLU-MN sent a letter to the school board chair and district superintendent to urge them to reverse this ill-advised edict.

17 ACLU affiliates and DC, including the ACLU of Minnesota, have filed claims to hold the Trump administration accountable for harms caused by federal immigration agents.
ACLU affiliates filed 54 claims from 17 states and DC to hold the Trump administration accountable for harms caused by federal agents.15 people in 7 states experienced abuses in ICE detention.

13 people in 5 states and DC experienced retaliation for exercising their First Amendment rights.

26 people in 10 states and DC were either wrongfully or violently arrested by federal law enforcement.

32 U.S. citizens in 10 states and in DC were harmed by federal law enforcement, including 14 people who were racially profiled and unlawfully arrested.

Twin Cities police departments said they did not share information obtained through Automatic License Plate Readers with federal agencies. However, records show federal agents were still able to access the data collected by ALPRs.

Today, the United State Supreme Court ruled that states can ban transgender girls from school sports. However, in Minnesota, our policies protect transgender student athletes from discrimination under the Minnesota Human Rights Act and the Minnesota Constitution.

The ACLU of Minnesota is closely monitoring potentially unlawful immigration enforcement in the Brainerd and Bemidji areas, including local law enforcement's role in such actions. 

Operation Metro Surge is said to be over, but recent arrests reflect a pattern of troubling enforcement activity throughout MN. A federal judge stated that declarants in Hussen v. Mullin lawsuit were profiled and that their rights had been violated.

Last week, the ACLU-MN filed to dismiss Hussen v. Mullin in order to pursue individual claims on behalf of plaintiffs in the lawsuit. We will continue to demand accountability from the agencies involved who violated the rights of Minnesotans.

Last week, a federal appeals court sided with Minnesota and left in place a policy allowing transgender students to play sports on teams that align with their gender identity and expression.
A private group sued over a Minnesota policy that allows students to play sports on teams that align with their gender identity and expression. The organization, based in Texas, sought to roll back Minnesota's protections or transgender student athletes.Last week, a federal appeals court found that the group lacks the right to sue, which means that transgender students can continue to play sports on teams that align with their gender identity and expression."The court was clear: the president's executive orders attacking transgender people do not overturn Minnesota law protecting their rights.
