This November, Public Question 1 would change Indiana’s Constitution and expand when courts can deny bail and jail someone before trial, before they have been convicted. Know what’s at stake before you vote: bit.ly/46tqulm
The End of the Presumption of Innocence In the upcoming midterm election, Hoosiers will decide whether to expand Indiana’s power to jail people before trial, and before they have been convicted of a crime. What is Public Question 1? This proposed amendment to the Indiana Constitution would allow courts to deny bail in more cases, based on one judge’s ruling.

That means more people could be jailed until trial, even though they have not been convicted and are still presumed innocent. What’s at stake? Someone denied bail could remain in jail for months before the government has proven its case.

That can cost people their jobs, homes, health care, and separate them from their families.

Declining to replace SNAP benefits after an extended power outage can be catastrophic to families just trying to get by, as this article from The 19th showcases. You can read the full article here: bit.ly/4xE5zHY
The last thing Hoosier families should have to worry about after a storm knocks out their power for weeks is having their SNAP claims denied.

This article from The 19th shows just how devastating that can be for working families.Quite frankly, there is a really easy way to get past all of the paperwork and the administrative burden here.

The state has the ability, with or without a disaster stamp declaration, to do mass benefit replacement by looking at the households in the zip codes that we know were impacted.

Emily Bryant
ED, Feeding Indiana’s Hungry
Quoted in The 19thAs we have said, disaster recovery is a civil liberties issue.

Many Gary, Indiana, residents were without power for weeks after recent storms.

Some having their SNAP claims be denied is a twist-of-the-knife for Hoosiers already grappling with the hardships these storms caused them.

The state must do better.

When disaster happens, Hoosiers need to know their government has their back. They shouldn’t have to worry about claim denials based on beaurocratic technicalities.

Amid reports of increased ICE activity, Hoosiers should be reminded of their rights when dealing with immigration officials. More information and resources can be found here: www.aclu-in.org/know-your-rights/im…
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: witnessing ice arrests
Stay calm and keep your distance. Give agents enough space that they can’t claim you’re interfering.
Record what’s happening. You generally have the right to film ICE agents working in public.
Do not physically interfere. Don’t touch agents, block them, or try to stop the arrest.
Don’t answer questions for the person being stopped. Let them decide what information, if any, they want to provide to ICE.
If ICE starts questioning you, ask: “Am I free to leave?” If they say yes, leave. If they say no, you can remain silent and ask for a lawyer.the right to dOCUMENT WHAT’S HAPPENING
Record continuously if you can. Capture what agents say and do, especially any use of force.
Get identifying details. Note agent names, badge numbers, agency, vehicles, and license plates.
Document the time and location. Include street signs, landmarks, or anything that shows exactly where the arrest happened.
Pay attention to any warrant. If agents show one, document it if you safely can. An ICE warrant is different than one signed by a judge.
Keep track of where they take the person. Note the vehicle, license plate, direction they leave, and anything that could help family or a lawyer locate them afterward.know your rights: what to do after the ice arrest
Keep the original recording. Don’t edit, crop, or delete anything that could detail what happened.
Write down what you saw. As soon as you can, note what agents said, what they did, and anything you may not have captured on video.
Share information with the person’s family or lawyer. Your footage and notes could provide important details for the family.
Share carefully. Information helps, but reconsider posting footage if it could put the person or their family at greater risk.
Report possible rights violations. Share what you documented with their lawyer or a trusted legal organization.if someone you love has been detained
Find their A-Number. It’s usually 9 digits and may be on a Green Card or paperwork from USCIS, ICE, or immigration court.
Search locator.ice.gov. Use their A-Number and country of birth. No A-Number? Search their exact name and country of birth.
If they don’t appear, try again later. They may still be processing or in another agency’s custody. You can also call 1-888-351-4024.
Get legal help. Indiana families can call NIJC’s Detention Project at 773-672-6599 for a legal screening and possible representation. The hotline is open every other Tuesday, 12-3 p.m. ET. Other resources include Indiana AID, Indiana Legal Services, and Mariposa Legal.

Indiana’s prisons are already crowded, and the state is cutting programs that help keep people out of them. The result could be more people pushed into an already costly prison system instead of getting treatment and support in their communities. More: bit.ly/4hSOEMV
Indiana is expanding incarceration while cutting the very programs designed to keep people out of prison. State prisons are already operating above 95% capacity, and the number of people incarcerated for Level 6 felonies has grown more than 22% in two years. Cutting treatment and community-based alternatives will only push more people into an already crowded and costly system.Indiana spends about $85.44 per day, or roughly $31,000 a year, to incarcerate one person. With state prisons operating at more than 95% capacity and about 26,500 people incarcerated, that adds up to more than $821 million a year. At the same time, the number of people incarcerated for Level 6 felonies, Indiana’s lowest felony classification, grew 22.3% between August 2024 and July 2026.

Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we mark 106 years since the 19th Amendment was certified. It expanded voting rights, but did not make access to the ballot equal for all women. The fight for true equality continues.
Women’s Equality Day 106 years ago today, the 19th Amendment was certified, prohibiting the government from denying someone the right to vote because of their sex. images show suffragettes. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. 19th amendment United States ConstitutionJust three years after the 19th Amendment was certified, the Equal Rights Amendment was first introduced in Congress in 1923, seeking to guarantee equal rights under the law regardless of sex. It took nearly 50 years for Congress to approve it and send it to the states in 1972. By the 1982 ratification deadline, 35 states had approved the ERA. By 2020, 38 states had ratified the ERA, but its legal status remains contested because the final ratifications came after the deadline. The 19th Amendment did not guarantee equal access to the ballot. Black women continued to face Jim Crow laws, intimidation, and violence. And despite being Indigenous to this land, many Native American women were not recognized as U.S. citizens until 1924. Other women of color also faced discriminatory laws that kept them from voting for years to come. 106 years later, the fight for equal rights, access, and full participation continues.

The courts have blocked Trump’s USPS mail-voting restrictions from taking effect — but USPS finalized the rule anyway in case that block is lifted. These restrictions aren’t needed to run safe, secure elections.
The Trump administration is still pushing restrictions on mail-in voting — even after a federal court blocked them.
In March, President Trump ordered new requirements for mail ballots.

It’s blocked by courts, but USPS still finalized the rule late Friday so it could take effect quickly if that block is lifted. What would these new mail-in voting restrictions do?
States and local election officials would have to give USPS the names of voters receiving mail ballots, along with unique barcodes tied to both the outgoing ballot and return envelope.

That gives a federal agency a new role in deciding whether ballot mail moves forward — and means eligible voters could face delays because of a database mismatch, barcode issue, or government error they had no control over. For now, courts are protecting voters from these unnecessary restrictions.
A federal court has stopped USPS from putting the rule into effect, so nothing has changed for voters right now.

But USPS finalized the rule so it could move quickly if that court block is lifted. We’ll keep watching — and keep defending voters from new barriers that could make it harder to cast a ballot and have it counted.

ICE is set to purchase thousands of gloves capable of producing a painful electric shock to those they grasp, according to reporting from the Associated Press. This is just the latest in a slew of concerning developments from the agency. Read the full AP story here: bit.ly/3UfEA6K
"ICE spent the last year showing this country they are too quick to use force. Now they will be able to deploy electric shocks with the slight push of a button that maybe nobody else can see them do. Introducing gloves that can so easily be used to deliver terrible pain in encounters is a recipe for harm to the public."
