Absolutely. Aside from the mandatory "Hi I'm the CO and I Genuinely Care About Your Welfare" trips downstairs? I'd bet he never once left officer country. A ship CO doesn't ever go through the mess line. It's like a prison warden deciding they want to eat in the general population cafeteria.

We later decorate the tree with bits from around the building, a DVD of imagery that failed to burn right gets taped to an inflated rubber glove to serve as the star. Dip cans, Pop Tarts, shell casings, and some balls of aluminum foil make for a pretty respectable effort.

The crazy thing was it cut both ways. Some American families, some Japanese. One guy I knew had a great grandfather in-law IJN officer killed in late 1944. Grandmother went to her grave without even speaking in his presence or to their two kids. Rest of the family was totally cool, though.

Read this thread. Some of my friends who married Japanese women had to deal with this from their in-laws. Kids that weren't acknowledged as real people because they were mixed race, marriages the family refused to recognize. It's never a good thing to have to choose.
