It all started so well, warm & still with the 1st moth in this smart Pearly Underwing, then the moon came up & the bats arrived (1 narrowly missed my head!), more migrants with 16 S M Willow, 4 P vitrealis & 3 Western Conifer Seed Bug also 11 Clancy's R, 5 L album W, Wax M & Red-line Quaker NFY

Great to see 2 Mullein Wave on the night of 27/9 after an absence of a few years, with 2 more Plumed Fan-foot I assume they are well established locally, also 3 more Feathered Brindle, 7 L-album W, 6 Small Mottled Willow & down to 7 Clancy's Rustic #teammoth

I believe this hairy beast (to my moth light) is Dexia rustica, a tachinid I need more of as it's a parasite of Cockchafers (that I have a surplus of!). Lots of aerial action over the garden today with buzzards & sparrowhawks displaying, a red kite very low & a spitfire did a victory roll + 2 HbHm

The only migrant of note last night was a bit of a pleb (Crocidosema plebejana), best a fine Bloxworth Snout, a late Nyctegretis lineana, Feathered Ranunculus NFY, 6 Delicate & 3 Ancylosis oblitella #teammoth

2 Mexicans in the garden that have enjoyed this summer are the well named Bessera elegans & Tigridia orthantha (which after languishing in the ground for 4 years had over 20 flowers after being potted up), new this year are Salvia oxyphora from Bolivia & the lemon zest scented Hedychium corelli

There's a good article online from PNAS (Anti-bat ultrasound production in moths is globally and phylogenetically widespread) it seems Noctuidae do it but they don't know how!

Here in the UK its called Silver-striped Hawk-moth, as its foodplants are not native I presume it arrived after colonisation

Still fairly quiet here in Kessingland, the usual common migrants (best Convolvulus Hm on the ginger), 7 Ancylosis oblitella a new record, the Large & BB yellow UWs starting to wake up, pics of Blackneck NFY, Tawny Wave, A bundle of Coast Darts & Beautiful Marbled from 13th

Despite 10+ Painted Lady, 2 Red Admiral & a Humming-bird H-m in the garden yesterday the only migrants overnight were a few Diamondbacks, but any night with a Star-wort can't be bad!

The only tacsonia I have seen in the wild (that looked just like yours) was below Papallacta pass (Ecuador) at c10,000ft in driving sleet & it was bloody freezing

A new micro in the garden this year were 3 Chionodes distinctella, though it seems to be incredibly variable & could be fumatella (esp. No. 2), opinions welcome!. Also new was Great green Bush-cricket

Though the explosive dehiscence is quite vicious if you get too close (I used to work in a greenhouse to a chorus of seeds pinging off the glass!)
