For those of us who are blind, the promise of rideshare technology was supposed to be a gateway to freedom and autonomy. Instead, for many in our community who use service animals, ridesharing has…

WHO GIVES apple the RIGHT TO BREAK THE RULES? I am absolutely livid. I just got off the phone with an "expert" from Apple who had the audacity to tell me that it's perfectly fine for a checkbox to have absolutely NO label association. Are you kidding me?. I was navigating a system dialog on a brand-new Mac—a premium machine that costs a fortune—and I hit a checkbox.

In this post, I am going to focus on issues for people traveling with mobility equipment. Note that if they also have a service animal, the effect is multiplied. The Cost and Complexity of Mobility Aids I have many friends who travel and use various mobility aids. They have so many more problems than I ever have when traveling. Power chairs are extremely customized and therefore also extremely expensive.

For years, I have tracked the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). This year, the experience felt different, a change I attribute to the creation by CES of an accessibility stage. Previously, accessibility products were simply integrated into the main show. While major journalists often misunderstood them, they were at least present and got a good share of the coverage. This year's accessibility coverage was abysmal and incredibly hard to find.

Traveling outside of the continental U.S. and Canada is even more complex than traveling domestically. This includes Hawaii, as the regulations there are far more complicated than in the rest of the United States or Canada. Navigating U.S. Re-Entry Let me begin with the simplest part of the process. If I travel outside of the contiguous United States, I need to complete a form required by the U.S.

For many years, traveling with a service dog was relatively easy. But today, we must go through an endless number of steps and procedures which were implemented to "help." The intended outcome was never realized, and the situation is actually intolerable. A few years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation created new rules for individuals traveling with service animals. This policy was meant to get rid of problems caused by people traveling with untrained animals or people falsely claiming service or emotional support animals.

I recently made a significant life change that means I'll be traveling more than ever before. If you know me, you know I always travel with a guide dog. This means I spend significantly more time preparing for a trip than most people. Traveling with a service animal requires more steps than you might expect. In the next few posts, I'll discuss some of the challenges that make traveling with a service dog more difficult than necessary.

The conference to learn, apply, and improve our craft.

Many people wonder why I am so passionate about accessibility, and this is my number one reason: There are so many ways that technology liberates people with disabilities. I can’t help but be upset when something that could be life changing fails. In this post, I will talk about how what might just be a convenience for some will be essential for others.

For about ten years, there has been an increase in web sites using accessibility overlays. These tools are never as good as their marketing implies. In fact, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has fined the largest overlay company $1,000,000 for false advertising and deceptive practices. Many times, the overlay will even make the website harder to use for some disabled users.

Rob, Ryan, and Lis are joined this week by the delightful and outspoken Lucy Greco—YouTuber, Accessibility Evangelist, and champion of all things inclusive! Lucy shares the inside scoop on her advo…

So many companies ask people with disabilities to give up some of the basic human rights that most people take for granted. As a blind person, I feel I should still have the right to keep my personal life private, but this is harder than you would think. I understand that even writing this blog might be sharing more than some people would consider appropriate.
