As President of Ireland, may I join with all those who have expressed such grave concern following today's strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, and Iran's retaliatory strikes in the region.
The normalisation of war, including the invasion at will of sovereign states, is a path that only leads to destruction and loss of life.
As the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres has said, today's escalation undermines international peace and security with severe potential consequences for civilians and regional stability.
All possible steps must be taken to avoid a further escalation in the region.
I call on all sides to immediately return to diplomacy and negotiation in line with the principles of international law and the UN Charter.
I welcome the support of Irish embassies and missions in the region who are working to support Irish citizens at a time when their safety and welfare will be of immediate concern to all those with friends and family living in the region.

Energizing time in Fredericton #NewBrunswick at the @canadiansorg.bsky.social info table at the Walastokuk Social Forum! About 40 groups there with visions & actions for a more peaceful, sustainable, equitable & people-centred society. We have the solutions! Organized people vs organized money! ✊💕
A group of five people (volunteers and Atlantic regional coordinator) stand and sit together behind a table with a banner that says “Council of Canadians. People. Planet. Democracy.” Three of the people wear t-shirts that say “Billionaires VS All Of Us” Poster for the Social Forum in Wolastokuk Oct. 4-5 listing themes including climate justice, Indigenous sovereignty, worker power and Palestine solidarity and listing supporting organizations: NB Media Co-op, CEDAR, Migrant Justice Centre and Wilmot United ChurchStickers, buttons, and zines on the Council of Canadians info table highlighting opposition to fracking, support for public water, the Draw The Line campaign, and Canadian sovereignty in the face of annexation threats from the US administration.

Wore red today for migrant justice! #StatusForAll No #DrawTheLine rally here but I messaged my MP about Bill C-2 and dropped into the Welcome Party in Amherst #NovaScotia hosted by Yreach settlement services to cap off a week of celebrating diversity. Follow & support @migrantrightsca.bsky.social
A collage of photos showing me, a white woman with glasses wearing a red shirt and black jacket with buttons that say Draw The Line and Demand Status For All. The other photos show a poster that says “Welcoming Week: Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Cumberland County”, a group of Indian dancers in flowing dresses, and a closeup of traditional Ukrainian embroidery.

“Another round of deregulation and pro-corporate policy-making … won’t lower rents or shorten hospital wait times, just as gutting an already underfunded public sector will not magically spur growth or make our democratic institutions stronger.” archive.ph/Y2lbY

It was a gorgeous day at Port Greville NS today! This is the stunning view from the lookoff there. #NovaScotia
Fluffy white clouds in a blue sky are reflected in Greville Bay. Long yellow-brown grass is in the foreground on the cliff edge and down to the left a long beach winds away into the distance where it meets a tree-covered cliff at the horizon. There’s also a tree-covered cliff in the distance across the water.

Spotted an urban deer in Truro last weekend. It was just taking a break on a very hot day, sitting in the shade on someone’s front lawn. 🙂
A deer curled up on the lawn next to some hostas and garden plants at the front corner of a house

Sport Chickadee. Also known as Red-Breasted Nuthatch 🙂
A red-breasted nuthatch on white tube-shaped bird feeder, upside down with its sleek black-striped head ready to peck at a peanut. Its caramel-coloured red breast is showing. There’s a grey shed wall and bare shrub branches in the background with tree trunk shadows on the snow that’s on the ground.

Thomas Piketty in Le Monde: “Trump, national-capitalism at bay” www.lemonde.fr/blog/piketty... More democratic and ecological socialism, please. Here’s his conclusion:
In the face of Trumpism, Europe must, first and foremost, remain true to itself. No one on the continent, not even the nationalist right, wants to return to the military postures of the past. Rather than devoting its resources to an endless arms race – Trump is now demanding military budgets of up to 5% of GDP – Europe must base its influence on law and justice. Targeted financial sanctions, effectively applied to a few thousand leaders, can make a stronger impact than stockpiling tanks. Above all, Europe must heed the calls from the Global South for economic, fiscal and climate justice. It must renew its commitment to social investment and definitively overtake the US in terms of training and productivity, just as it has already done in terms of health and life expectancy. After 1945, Europe rebuilt itself through the welfare state and the social-democratic revolution. This project remains unfinished: on the contrary, it must be seen as the beginning of a model of democratic and ecological socialism that must now be thought through on a global scale.

Winter sunset at the Maccan River #NovaScotia
A row of dark trees on the horizon with a stripe of orange sunset glow behind them, big heavy blue clouds above, and the frozen snow-dusted river below, with bluish white snow on the riverbank in the foreground.

The federal govt scapegoated migrants when announcing the immigration rollback. Migrants are wrongly blamed for the housing, healthcare, and affordability crises. Sign the Migrant Rights Network’s petition to call for rights not cuts: migrantrights.ca/take-action/... #cdnpoli #immigration
