NS provided $590M in PSE operating grants in 2022/23. Spending tied to students from outside the province and university research generated an estimated $2.3B in economic activity across NS, supporting about 21,000 full-time equivalent jobs. Public Education Is Our Lighthouse. #BeaconforNSPSE

Dr. Faraone and her team are decoding the "chemical language" of ticks, who use tiny sensory organs to detect odours from people, pets, and wildlife. The team studies how ticks smell, navigate, and choose their hosts.

The Acadia Wildlife Museum has a large fluid-preserved collection that has had to be sorted, topped up and organized. Along with students and volunteers, Jen works to make it easier for researchers to find specimens and learn from the collection.

Bats in the belfry? Burrowing birds? Specimens from the Acadia Wildlife Museum have been used in research such as determining contaminant levels present in Leach’s Storm Petrels over time. These collections can tell us about genetic and distribution changes in populations.

Collections were historically recorded by hand in ledgers, but in order to share this collection with researchers and conservationists beyond Acadia, the team is in the process of digitizing the collection and records.

There are all sorts of treasures to discover in the collection, such as these bird displays that date to the mid 1800’s. They sometimes need some TLC, so learning about how this work was done in the past and how to safely care for them in the present is also part of Jen’s job.

When we talk about the “value of universities,” we are really talking about the value of work done by people at universities. Universities work because we do!

Acadia University Faculty Association @acadiafaculty.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Both universities and labour unions are negatively stereotyped as resistant to change. This series highlights innovative, creative, and impactful work being done by our members (unionized faculty) to benefit our communities.

Acadia University Faculty Association @acadiafaculty.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Especially at smaller universities like ours, public focus is often on teaching. Teaching IS an important part of our work! But it is often closely connected to, and reliant on, our other two job responsibilities: research and service.
100
Acadia University Faculty Association @acadiafaculty.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
University workers’ research, teaching, and service benefits the public and our communities. This is why this work needs both public support and continued investment from governments.
101
Acadia University Faculty Association @acadiafaculty.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Governments, including ours in NS, are prioritizing research with short-term economic benefits and teaching that prepares students for the job market. But universities’ value is much broader than that!
111
Acadia University Faculty Association @acadiafaculty.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
While public trust in universities in Canada is still relatively high, events elsewhere show us that this support can erode quickly. It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that universities are under attack.

Nova Scotia has proposed legislation increasing political interference in universities. Political interference in education isn’t just an American phenomenon. It’s alive and well in Canada too. Politicians should not dictate the priorities of universities.
