For this summit, the speakers are a mix of people who left academia and people who are still there. I think unions are important but they haven’t done enough. There are also states where unions are illegal. Not everyone can wait for union work to come to fruition.

Faculty: did you take a vow of poverty? It sure feels that way. This summit will put you in community w/ people who feel the same. The speakers share how they reconnected w/ themselves & rejected the scarcity mindset academia taught us. Earn more money w/o feeling guilty about it! #academicsky

Spoiler alert: Your university lied to you. Faculty are told we’re family. So we sacrifice our personal lives & health to do whatever they need. But there’s never room for our needs. The sooner you realize you’re just a number, the sooner you can start building a life where you have agency.

A member of my program told me she paid her mortgage last month by editing 1 book. It took 18 hours. That’s just half a week of work. 👏 That’s why I teach academics how to use their skills in their own editing or coaching business. You deserve better than the scraps academia throws you.

Had a lovely 1st trip to NYC until we got to @americanair.bsky.social gate to fly home. Agent berated us for trying to pre-board with little kids. I asked her name and she accused me of harassing her. Really soured the vacation for us and scared the crap out of my kids. Idk why ppl are so cruel.

What are you even talking about? He has vast grassroots support. Where did he ever say he wasn’t going to also fundraise? Name me any other candidate who does not also fundraise. Taking money at a dinner where the max donation is $7.5k is vastly different than getting into bed with corporations.

Considering that every other candidate takes money, I’m not sure why this matters. No one who’s actually from Maine has this kind of money. 😂 Which is why we want him elected—to dismantle the system and build something better for working people. (+ $7k a plate is nothing compared to other events)

This is the most unhinged take I’ve seen on Platner to date. I live 5 miles from the guy. I have friends who’ve worked with him in mutual aid for years. People who actually live in Maine are SO tired of listening to the peanut gallery. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Please STFU.

That still feels low to me. Maybe if one was getting COLAs and annual merit raises as well, that would make sense. But I don’t know.

That feels like not enough, right? For 6-ish years and everything you have to do to get it? Plus likely no raises or COLAs in between (or not much)?

On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast. The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me. But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.
On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamilla’s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being “served food that contained worms.”

A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees.

The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.
