We recommend that the Commonwealth use willingness-to-pay modelling to help determine which heritage to preserve vs what should be repurposed for housing.

Both planning and economic constraints limit what can be done. Trade-offs regarding heritage protections need to be made so these sites can maximise their potential for public benefits.

Housing must be at the core of the divestment of old defence land. AHNA advocates for transforming these underutilised assets into vibrant, high-density urban spaces rather than letting them deteriorate at high public cost.

We urge the Commonwealth Government to follow the evidence and reduce the discount rate. The additional revenue recovered should be used to: → Fund a revitalised National Competition Policy, → Fund the construction of more public housing, and → Raise the rate.

6/ Fair Funding for Social Housing 🏢 Public housing shouldn’t be financially punished. Right now, govs pay more to build & maintain public homes than community housing—thanks to GST rules and unfair Rent Assistance access. Let’s fix the system and end the youth penalty.

5/ Boost Rent Assistance Now 🏠 Renters are hurting—and Rent Assistance isn’t keeping up. Raise the rate by 50% for singles, 40% for couples, and index it to the real rental market. It’s the fastest way to help low-income renters right now.

4/ One Licence to Build Them All 👷‍♀️ We don’t just need more workers—we need them where the homes are. A national trades licensing scheme would end arbitrary rules, let workers cross borders, and fill the skills gap fast. If you can build a house in WA, you can build one in Vic!

3/ Feasibility Fund 🏗️ Good projects are stalled by a bad economic environment. A Targeted Infrastructure Feasibility Fund, inspired by bi-partisan WA policies, would rebate key costs—like water and power hookups—to get apartments built in places that need them most.

2/ Fix Housing Accord Incentives 💸 States can’t meet housing targets with vague promises and no support. Let’s pay them to upzone, simplify planning, and fast-track homes—not just reward them 5 years later. Smart incentives now = more homes, faster.

1/ National Townhouse Accord 🏘️ Australia needs more homes where people want to live. A National Townhouse Accord would allow townhouses across our cities by-right — reforming outdated rules, boosting supply, and replicating Auckland’s upzoning success.

A re-elected Albanese Government can’t take a breather on housing. The crisis isn’t slowing down and the current policies won’t shift the dial. It must hit the ground running. That’s why we launched 'The Brick Book' — 6 big ideas for real reform.

The fundamentals of building don’t change when you cross borders—only regulations do. Electricity is the same in NSW or VIC. A national licensing scheme for electrical trades is common sense, helping fill skills shortages faster!

We urgently need planning reform. Making it easier for new supermarkets to open means more competition, lower prices, and more choices for everyone.

Remember when Kaufland tried entering Australia? Supermarket lobbyists fought hard against streamlined planning approvals by the Victorian Government, insisting decisions go back to local councils.

Abundant Housing Network Australia @abundanthousing.org.au · 22/03/2025
Are Woolies and Coles playing fair? ACCC says planning restrictions have created a land squeeze, enabling these supermarket giants to outbid rivals or even stop new competitors entirely.

Abundant Housing Network Australia @abundanthousing.org.au · 22/03/2025
Why are grocery prices in Australia so high? It’s not just inflation—it's about competition. The ACCC just dropped a key insight: simplifying planning laws can lower prices by letting more supermarkets compete. Here's what's happening 👇

It's great to see the Prime Minister take leadership on making Australia a country that builds the homes that people need🏘️🏗️
"Years ago, there's a development in Marrickville right on the station called Revolution Apartments. It's in the old Marrickville RSL site. And I had a group of people come to see me, and they were totally hostile to the development. And I said to them, 'what better location is there for medium density?' I think it's probably six or seven stories high, and they got additional apartments allowed by having some affordable housing development in there. Importantly, they don't need a car space for every flat, because it's right on Marrickville station." - Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister of Australia

The Abundant Housing Network Australia welcomes the addition of housing construction workers to the core skills visa list, a necessary step toward building the 1.2 million well-located homes our country desperately needs.
AHNA welcomes the addition of housing construction workers to the core skills visa list, a necessary part of building the 1.2 million well-located homes our country desperately needs. We have been calling for this change since our September 2023 letter to Minister O'Neil, and are pleased to see the government finally take action, and actually treat this crisis like a crisis.

When we launched in 2023, we told the Federal Government that with our construction industry workforce shortage, building homes needs skilled migration.
Letter to Clare O'Neil MP - "Solving the housing crisis needs skilled migrants" - describes AHNA's concerns about the government's decision to exclude skilled tradespeople from a visa fast-track scheme
